Roadtrip USA

Well, This has been in my mind for some years now

Im trying to plan for the summer 2008 a roadtrip in the USA, east to west coast basically.

I will be 23 at the time, and well that seem to pose problem to rent a mobile home it seems.

Also, where should i go, when, why?
Im looking on a 3-4 weeks travel.

So far my USA experience is limited to Washington DC, Florida and LA...

Budget is quite high (for a student), 2K dollars per person at least, not including flights from and back to europe.

Any tips or any people who have done it before?

What are your interests? Do you like to party, gamble? Do you like to visit museums and learn about history? Is sightseeing a priority? Tell a little more about what you're looking for during your trip.

I did this several years ago. you probably don't want to rent a mobile home, they are very expensive. you can spend way less money through a combination of staying in cheap hotels and camping in state parks.

I would either buy or rent a car, and then go to wal mart. wal mart is a large store where you can buy all the camping gear you will need for your trip. most of it will be cheap, but will last you for your trip.

how long will you guys be travelling? this doesnt seem like a lot of money to me to be driving coast to coast. Hell, I can blow 1k very very easily on a weekend trip to chicago.

The trip will mostly be to see the scenery and visit a few interesting cities on the way. No gambling (im the only one actually playing poker in this friend circle, we will be 4 or so, thereby the mobile home)

Ehm for the money i can lay out more (thanks to poker) but the other friends cannot, so that might become a problem

You will not be able to rent a vehicle if you are under 25 and foreign. A better bet is to buy a somewhat reliable car wherever you begin your journey and then try to sell it at your destination. Some friends of mine from back home (Sweden) did this very thing many years ago. Three of them pooled their money and bought this canary yellow Cadillac convertible in NY. They zig-zagged across the states, spent time with various friends and acquaintances along the way and eventually ended up in SoCal three months later, where they sold the car for a profit. Good times were had by all.

I'm actually doing the same thing this summer. My roomate and I are both 28 and quitting our jobs and have some free time.

Our basic itinerary is:

DC->TN->St Louis->Kansas->Denver, straight driving
->Utah (2 days)
->Las Vegas (Fri-Mon)
->SD, LA, SF (5 days total)
->Arizona/NM (3 days total)
->TX (1 day in Austin + 1 other day)
->Arkansas (3 days, family)
->Memphis/Nashville (2 days/1 day)
-> East TN -> DC

Of course, I can't tell you how much fun it'll be 'cause we haven't done it yet. We leave July 7. Maybe we'll see you on the road.

(BTW I'm bitter you got advice and I didn't
