If the game has a 1/2 kill, then a good portion of the session will be $15-30 so it's really not 20 big bets. Also, kill games tend to be looser games overall, and imo, $400 wouldn't be enough to make me feel comfortable, but that's how taking a shot is supposed to feel, I guess.

Ok, update time. I went broke. j/k. I ended up with $417 ($17 profit) after 2.5 hours. The game is crazy soft, and about half of the hands were kill pots (maybe 40%) maniac to my left was ripe for the check raise all day. I made two wheels and got paid. I think I only misplayed one hand where I had the nut flush draw and second nut low. Some guy had the nut high str8 when my frush didnt show up and the nut low. That sucked.

This was more or less a fact finding expedition to see how comfortable I felt sitting down. I felt very comfortable with $400. Now, this game is way outside my 2.5k bankroll (2k online $500 live usually for 3/6 or 1/2 nl), but I have a good feeling that this is the game to turn that 2k into 5 or 6 by summer's end, barring some bad cards. If you understand position and how to rank poker hands, this game is a honey pot. There were, however two "pro's" that knew exactly how to extract chips and were sitting with 2k+, but I was basically nutbarring this first session anyway. The old men and asian women are just so horrible (they cant fold 2,8,9,j preflop)It spreads tuesdays and thursdays, which is great because my gf has class late those days. yahtzee. Im going again tommorow and will dominate. I love live O8. I may never play hold 'em again.

if you are serious about playing poker and building a real bankroll for live play, this is insanity. if you play for recreation(even though you might be a good winning player) or if you are just wanting to "take a shot" and see what happens, than this is great. I'd buy into a full ring LHE game 10/20 for 500 bucks, with the smaller variance in O8, I think a 400 buy-in is plenty, but a few bad hands, especially during a kill, will chop that buy-in to pieces.

if you are serious about building a bankroll, I wouldn't be playing this level of O8 until I had about 5K live bankroll, and I'd be very careful about taking my shots and how much I was willing to lose during bad sessions before I moved down.

Online short-handed HE & O8 have taught me valuable bankroll lessons, and lessons about taking shots.

This isnt an unreplentishable (word?) bankroll. I am a recreational player with a decent real job (chemist) When my roll inflates I just go on a vacation, usually bi-annual vegas trips and some tunica weekend trips. I won't get hurt if I have a bad session and lose $400, but I believe this game is so soft I could easily string together 5 or 6 fairly profitable sessions. Hopefully the $400 will become a start to a decent live roll, which I've never really had. It isnt "insanity" because it isnt that important.
