Is Randy Moss a Hall of Famer right now?

Career Stats.

Say Randy Moss gets run over by a train tomorrow morning: Should he be elected to the Hall? Would he be?

The case for inclusion: Is arguably the greatest deep treat in the history of the NFL. From his very first game as a rookie through the next six seasons, he was usually the best player on the field. In eight playoff games, he's averaged 90 yards and 1.1 TDs. 5th all-time on the career Receiving TDs list. More than any single player, carried a flawed 1998 Vikings team to a 15-1 record as a rookie. Was able to coast on raw talent and still be dominant for more than half a decade.

The case for exclusion: Did, in fact, coast on raw talent instead of working to become a meticulous route runner or trying hard on every play. Quite possibly never threw a real block on a running play. Hampered by injuries and bad offenses, has now looked very human for a third of his career. Significant character issues on and off the field. Once hit a meter maid with his car ... intentionally. Just 21st all-time on the career Receiving Yards list, behind many WRs who have no chance in hell of being selected for the Hall.

I say 'Yes' to both, if you're looking for a bias in the OP.

A big problem is that (argue about whether this is fair or not), Sir Randy of Nevertry is in a class to compete with the 1996 WR Draft. That class, and some WRs to follow, have been so sick that there's a long line ahead of him, and it's likely he might get in, but it certainly wouldn't be first or second ballot.

If he can produce well for the Patriots, then yes.

He's on the border right now, mainly because he has no idea how to run across the middle of the field.

Two more arguments for induction:

-- I mentioned he was 5th all-time in Receiving TDs. Everyone else in the Top 12 is either in the Hall or headed there, with the possible exceptions of Terrell Owens (4th) and Andre Reed (10th).

-- As is frequently pointed out, Canton is not Cooperstown. There are lots of precedents for players with relatively short but exceptionally successful careers being enshrined, while lots of steady producers who played forever and put up big counting numbers are left outside. Gale Sayers is the prototype for this kind of HOFer; he's not even in the Top 50 in Rushing Yards or TDs. Steve Young is another good example -- he's 21st all-time in Passing Yards, just as Moss is 21st in Receiving Yards.

As a Vikings fan who watched every minute of every game since his rookie year in '98, I'm going to have to disagree with these two statements.

I bet 1/4 of his TD's or better every year were 10-15 yd crossing patterns where he shook his man and then outran the safeties to the end zone.

On running plays to his side, he was actually quite a decent blocker. This instruction came from Cris Carter when he was still there.

His biggest flaw is/was always uninterest in losing teams/games. If you watched when the game was close, he was a completely different player.

I'm sure some other Vikes fans can chime in to support both of my statements.

Moss is definately the most dominant wr sense Rice. Moss just dosnt like playing if ur team sucks.

Also this dosnt mean he dosnt love the game, he just is competitive and hates losing.

Who gives a [censored] about walking off the field w/ 4 seconds left.
