Funding Promotions from BBJ?
 

I just read that many casinos fund other promotions (Aces Cracked, HHJ, "Freerolls" etc) directly from the BBJ drop. Really, how common is it? Anyone knowledgeable want to estimate as to what percentage of Poker Rooms actually fund promotions directly as opposed to from their BBJ drop?

I have to admit, I was surprised when I read it.

25% of the BBJ is standard to be set aside for promotional funds.

I think it's more the rarity for casinos to self-fund promos. The BBJ or HHJ drop makes a great slush fund that they can use in all sorts of creative ways. Wynn and Venetian funded freeroll tourneys outta their own pockets--kudos. Most of the other "freeroll" tourneys I know in Vegas are not even slightly free--they're fully funded by players.

Pretty much standard in all the rooms I played in that the jackpot drop was divvied up among the bad beat / monte carlo / whatever other promotions the room had going.

I am less sure whether the jackpot drop funds the dollar-added or freeroll tourneys, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Canterbury Park takes 10% off the top of the jackpot drop to cover administrative expenses related to the jackpot. I'd be surprised if 1% didn't cover it, but whatever. They take an additional 15% which goes towards promotions--drawings, Aces always win, the free-roll on Sunday mornings, etc. I think most casinos do something similar. I'd be somewhat surprised if there were a casino that paid out 100% of the jackpot drop.

Are you certain of this? I simply can't believe that such gouging could be legal.

Look up the laws for whatever states you play in. There will probably be a rule about what percentage of the jackpot drop must be returned to the players - "maximum of 10% for administrative expenses" is SOP in Washington state, for a start.

I am currently in a state that allows the casino to take 20% as an administrative fee. Many states prohibit taking any of the bad beat funds. Some places take the dollar only for promotions (they have no jackpot, just promotions).
