BBV: Ask me anything about paleontology/field work in China/dinosaurs

Well I was supposed to do work today but I left my keys at home, so now I'll just be doing work intermittently. Anyhow I'm a paleontology grad student and I've gone to the field in China, so I might have some interesting stuff for you all. Also I can just make crap up and you'll never know it.

Ask some good questions or I'm moving this [censored] to OOT where they will actually appreciate it.

I'd be curious to hear your most interesting find so far. Why China as well? Was it more of a hot bed for dinosaur activity than other places, and why?

What's the process for extracting things without damaging them?

Oh, and have you seen Godzilla yet?

Ray

Are there really dinosaurs, or are the Jehovah Witnesses right?

Have you met Professor Jia Lampo? He pwns in Chinese paleontology. Unless you know him I'm not going to put much weight into your stories. Also, what do you think of the Yunxian [censored] Erectus?

And have you seen Godzilla fight a dinosaur yet?

Personally, I haven't found very much. My best find was a bunch of vertebrae and some hind limb elements of a theropod dinosaur (think velociraptor). China because it is basically untapped. The field site we go to was new when my advisor first started going there. Since then they have found a very interesting array of dinosaurs, mostly primitive forms of more well-known dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops (but like 50 million years earlier). One of my advisor's finds was recently in the news.

You put them in these massive plaster jackets. Basically you dig all around it, then just dump plaster all over it and extract it. They end up weighing like 10x as much as the fossil if not more. We once had a 3 ton jacket to get out a block of animals.
