Boxing with MMA Gloves

I think this would be a cool experiment. It would be interesting to see what effect the lighter gloves had, more knockouts, too many broken hands, both?

I would think that there'd be more knockouts because you have the power of the punch spread over less surface area and you can't protect your head as easily as with boxing gloves so it'd be easier to slip a punch through. Don't know about the broken hands. It doesn't seem like a huge problem in MMA, but they don't rarely box for the whole fight.

Gloves are to protect the fighter's hands, not the other person's face. There would be lots more broken hands. I'm not sure about knockouts.

It's weird how people don't realize this.

There would be way more knockouts, way more cuts, and way more broken hands.

There could be less knockouts since people's hands would be taking so much punishment.

It is true that glvoes protect the hands, but heavier gloves also do less damage to the object that they hit. Most organizations recently decided to go to heavier gloves in lighter weight classes, and there has been some complaining that this is leading to fewer knockouts.

MMA fighters very rarely break their hands, but they obviously throw far fewer punches. There would be far more 1 punch KOs with lighter gloves, but I'm not sure if guys would throw as many flurries for fear of hurting their hands.

If you're referring to me, I already know this. Nonetheless, if you spread a force over a larger surface area, it will do less damage. Think of it like thin ice. Standing straight up on it might allow you to sink through, while laying on your back spreads the weight out and allows you to stay on the ice. On the other hand, because the boxer's hands are protected more by the larger gloves, he can hit harder, so maybe that reason for more knockouts isn't valid. Still, mma gloves being smaller does leave the head more exposed compared to boxing gloves.

Re: Boxing with MMA Gloves

The vicious MMA knockouts are due to a variety of factors. The lighter/smaller gloves make it easier to land a direct shot. Due to the rules, the MMA fighters are in different positions than boxers, so punches are thrown from bizarre angles and from more dominating positions. The MMA fighters are also less skilled boxers than prizefighters, so they are not as good at defending themselves.

Add all that up, and you get a lot more clean shots where the victim is defenseless and/or doesn't see the punch coming. Which means more knockouts.
