Wikipedia taking forever to load
 

on one of my computers at home it takes Wikipedia forever to load.

I run XP Media Center
Pentium D 2.8Ghz
1G RAM
plenty of HD space

It loads fine on my work computer at home, which is a single core laptop but takes forever on the DT. This is the only website that gives me this problem.

Any ideas?

Very strange. I assume other pages load just fine on that pc. Sounds like something that clearing your cache might help but who knows.

I'd also be interested to hear if the slow Wiki loading happened in both IE and Firefox.

yes, it happens on both. Cache clearing: I will check that. That may be an issue.

Beavis it's very odd to me that IE and FF would both have the same problem since they don't share the same cache. I still think I'd do a full clean of the cache, internet temp files, history, etc in both IE and FF. Restart IE and FF after the cleaning and try it again. Honestly, since it's happening across multiple browsers that seems like a very unlikely fix but you've got to start somewhere.

Let me know what happens. But again, every other site loads in a normal time on that machine?

If stuff like this is happening across both browsers, it's usually a problem with the network or the Windows HOSTS file.

Some adblocking and spyware protection programs add entires to the HOSTS file in order to block ads, etc. This sometimes backfires and legitimate sites get added. You might want to open up your HOSTS file and see if there's anything related to Wikipedia in it.

I was going to ask OP: does it actually eventually load? or does it just sit there and process but never actually load anything?

it does load eventually.

the cache dump didnt seem to help.

every once in a while it loads fine, but then it slows down again. I tried it with my virus scan and privacy software turned off and it didnt help.

It works fine of my work laptop on the same network.

It ends up it was a conflict with my securiy software, even when I had the security software turned off it would happen. I completely uninstalled it and installed a new revo of the software and thing are looking better.
