Odd staking situation

Ok here's the deal... I put a friend of mine into a satellite. We figured if he won the satellite I'd play the tournament and give him a piece of me. He ended up winning the satellite and got in the tournament which I'm playing.

So now we're not sure what % of my action he should get. I say a lower % because it was my money he used for the satellite, he says a higher % because he actually played and won the satellite. What is the right % to give him in this situation?

He should be ecstatic with 25%. He'd have no right to complain about 15%.

I would think he should get around 25%. Basically, you could imagine it like 2 different tournaments. In the first you backed him and he played and you split the prize pool, say, 50/50. In the second he's backing you with his half of the winnings from the first tournament. So your entry fee is essentially half your money and half his money. And now for his half of the money, since you are playing, you get 50/50 split of that 50% which is what gives him the 25%. Even if you thought the backer should get more like 2/3 of the prize money that still works out to >22% for him.

15%-25% sounds reasonable to me. He had no chance to win it without your money and now its you playing for the real money.

25% sounds right to me also. In the end he used your money to win the seat. When it is your money on the line u get a bigger cut.

If I were the judge I would determine the Fair Market Value to be the amount of the Buy-In of the Prime Tourney less the cost of the Satellite. Tell him that's the deal he will get, then if you do cash give him a little pop, say 15%. In the end this method may be less than what he felt he was entitled to at the begining, but now he will be grateful in getting it since you reframed his expectation.

12.5%-25% seems perfect.

I have no idea how you could have put him in the satellite without negotiating this beforehand.
