How great is Dewey Tomko?
 

Twice this guy had the lead on the turn of the final hand of the WSOP big one. Each time the winner got there on the river making Tomko a two-time runner-up. I don't know what the chip counts were before these hands so maybe the stacks were close, maybe he was losing big--obviously he was covered. It just seems to me his name is never mentioned here and I wonder why? If those last cards fall differently we're talking about a two-time WSOP big one champ. Any stories, opinions?

Dewey is a very good player. He is just a victim of current society. A lot of people learn poker from tv without knowing the history and other good players in the game. I'll give you a sports example, Dennis Johnson. Besides Boston Celtic fans and old farts like myself(30's), most people 25 and younger have no idea who he was, let alone how good he truly was.

I don't know anything about Dewey Tomko. What I have 'heard' is interesting. Doyle Brunson said he was one of the few players who regularly got the money on the golf course back in the day. A guy I know spent a winter in Florida a few years ago where Tomko ran a regular no-limit game. He said Tomko was a nice guy, he played very tight, the game was good. Moneymaker attended one night my friend did and broke him. My friend had pocket Kings, the money ($2,000) went all in pre-flop. Moneymaker had Queens and flopped quads. My friend said Moneymaker brought $100,00 cash to the game just in case.

Tomko owns a golf course in Florida and Doyle Brunson is a partner. He plays to scratch. I saw him on a WPT final table a few years ago. Shortstacked heads-up against Phil Gordon. He seemed formidable, played very well but went down in the end. I was impressed and got to thinking, 'this guy is some player'. I would sure like to know more.

IIRC, it was Dewey Tomko who exposed Larry Flynt's WSOP cheating several years ago.
