Help increase my music collection!

So I picked up today's issue of Blender and I realized how out of the loop I am with regards to music. Let's see if OOT can help me out with some good albums from last year (2005 as well):

I know a lot of popular music from the radio (don't listen much but I know what's what) and a lot of "new" bands that are becoming popular now I know from back in the day when I listened to more emo/punk/pop punk music (AFI for example). My favorite album from last year was Bloc Party (maybe 2005) and I also really like the Raconteurs(anything Jack White and bluesy rock). I think the Killers are kind of cool but their 2nd album was pretentious crap. I don't really dig pop emo enough (Fall out boy, Panic! at the disco) anymore to warrant getting any of their albums. There are a lot of bands I've heard about but dont' know a lot of music by (Arctic Monkeys, The Academy is..., The HoldSteady) so if people like those I will listen to that as well.

Contrary to my title I don't listen to a ton of rap; I like a lot of it but usally choose not to listen to it as an album. However I'll take suggestions in that field too. Now DO IT!

Theres too much music to reccommend.

What i do suggest though, is either Pandora

or Last.fm

(do google searches for either)

Both are good. I'm currently using Last.fm. First of all it takes note of everything you listen to, then recommends you stuff based on that, and second of all, if you download the software, it has a radio feature, whereby you type in a tag (e.g. 80s) or an artist name, and it will then play you continuous music that relates to that artist or tag. Great for discovering new and old music.

Good suggestion, I've used Pandora before but not the other.

Yeah, Last.fm is similar, but has notable differences, give it a try.

Try branching out to some new genres. I did and it is great. With one exception, none of the artists listed below were known to me 1-2 years ago.

"Unique" Punk Rock: Flogging Molly

Electronica: Sleepthief

New Age/Folk: Celtic Woman

Indie Rock: Liz Phair (older albums only)

Adult Contemporary/Soft Rock: Jewel

You might like Cold War Kids. Their music is very bluesy, although not nearly as talented as Jack White.
