Re: Stud Hi Couple of big loss hands to check
One post per thread makes it a lot easier to read. Also, it will make it look like we have more traffic.
First hand--the raise on fourth street is spewing. It is overwhelmingly likely that you are up against two pair. You're behind, he's not folding, he's not giving you a free card, you're spewing. You're something like a 2:1 dog, and I don't think there's enough money in the pot to justify continuing. Second hand--third street is an easy fold. There are three spades gone. I don't really have a problem with the rest of it, although I might have checked sixth. Third hand--the raise on third is terrible. With a limper, it is wildly unlikely that you will buy this one on third street. Even without the limper, your hand is far too weak to attempt a steal with unless the bring-in is ridiculously tight. I'm curious what you put the other guy on that caused you to call on fifth but fold sixth. |
Re: Stud Hi Couple of big loss hands to check
1st hand: Fold on 4th when villian pairs his door card. Easy fold, imo. But, if you absolutely must play this hand, just check/call hoping to hit the flush. Nobody at these levels is capable (or willing) of folding a flush draw anyway.
2nd hand: I'd fold on 3rd with those spades gone & a King still to act behind you. 3rd hand: Have you lost your mind? I don't mind a raise to try a steal if the circumstances were right but carrying it that far is crazy. |
Re: Stud Hi Couple of big loss hands to check
On the first hand, the raise on fourth is a mistake. You want to fold here. You are likely up against two pair, maybe trips. There is no one else in the pot. You aren't going to get the correct odds IMO (I haven't worked out the math, but i am pretty sure I am correct).
In the second hand, I would consider a fold on third street becaue of all the spades that are gone, but after that I like the way you played it. If there were only two or less spades gone at the start of the hand, This would be well played IMO. In the third hand, it looks like you were trying to bluff on third. This is not easy since someone has already limped in. With this type of bluff, I figure I need to bet fourth and fifth without the villian catching. If he does catch, I need some kind of hand to be able to continue. The situation you are in calls for a semi-bluff, but what you are doing is a pure bluff because you don't have [censored]. It would have been very easy to fold on third, which is what I would have done. Given that you bluffed, which perhaps the circumstances of the game may have justified, you have to figure your opponent puts you on TT. However he still bets into you on fifth. At that point, you definitely have got to go. Unfortuantely, you catch a small pair, and I guess that keeps you in for another round of spewing. You have got to learn to get away from this type of situtation sooner, and to learn to pick better spots to bluff. In the end, you gained nothing from this hand, but lost a bunch of bets. |
Re: Stud Hi Couple of big loss hands to check
Hand 1: I would be tempted to raise 3rd but a call is fine. What on Gods green earth possessed you to raise 4th? The worst you are facing is 2 pair (usually). The rest is ok.
Hand 2: Coverter is hurting. I would fold 3rd. Too many dead spades. Other than that it is fine. Hand 3: 3rd is pretty henious unless you ropponent has shown a propensity to fold on early streets. Also, if you call 5th you should call 6th and vice versa- i.e. I porobably would have folded 5th. |
Re: Stud Hi Couple of big loss hands to check
I find it extremely unlikely that we are up against trips in the first hand.

I felt (obviously incorrectly) because two doorcards are paired that i have a better chance to improve than they do in the course of the hand.... Do i always need a live pair to continue? Do all 3 cards have to be higher than any door card? |
Re: Stud Hi Couple of big loss hands to check
In the stud 8 section of SS2, Todd Brunson shows the math that if two players have the same doorcard, there is a higher probability of one of them having a pair than if only one person has that doorcard exposed.
Also consider that you have a ten high. Do you really want to build a pot when you are drawing to a pair of tens and there is a King left to act behind you? What do you if a caller hits a J,Q,K,A or since you only paired your 8s even a 9 or a 10? |
Re: Stud Hi Couple of big loss hands to check
The 3rd hand would have been different if there already wasn't a limper. Your hand is HENIOUS. Thus, you want to play it onoy if you are going to see the blinds for sure. Here, the presence of a limper makes this unlikely.
Given the paired door cards, etc., if there wasn;t a limper and the bring in was tight, I would probably try this steal as well. |
