Beat - furnace quit working, $282 bill

My furnace went out over night, and it was 50 degrees in my house in the morning. Got a guy to come out and take a look. $282 later, he tells me the fan was tripped because I didn't change my filter (how did I not do that?), and there was a couple handfuls of dirt in the coils.

I guess I can brag that at least my house didn't catch fire and burn down because of this.

Yea, I guess I should be happy that I don't have to buy a new one. I just hate these random, unforseen expenses that pop up.

The fan was tripped? I worked in the industry 10yrs ago....
When he say the was dirt in your coil, I suspect A-coil above the furnace, but that really wont affect your heating, but it could affect cooling in the summer. Did he take the plenum apart (box above furnace) to get to A coil?
It's actually a pain in the ass to clean this....

Gota be careful with HVAC. They know people don't know chit about their own equipment and they tend to stick it too you... Not saying they robbed you, but you have details from the bill what they did? Seems quite high...

Did they replace any parts?

Well, they charged $80 for just coming out to visit. And I believe he was there for 3 hours. I know it was a pretty big pain for him to clean. I know absolutely nothing about furnaces, so for all I know I may have been mugged by this guy, which would make this beat even more unfathomable.

I will say this guy seemed to know what he was doing -- he definitely wasn't an idiot.
