pretty sure i have a mental disorder. What now?

So I have come to realization that i have some sort of mental disorder. My mood goes from jubilent to angry to depressed from one moment to the next. Ive been snapping at people undeservingly and have been depressed to the point of suicidal thoughts several times in the past month. Life generally feels hopeless most of the time.I also have had anxiety to the point where at one point i couldnt even dial my phone to have my hair cut.

I generally have a lot of trouble falling asleep. I usually cant fall asleep before 3 and even with 8-9 hours of sleep I still feel tired all day.

My concentration is absolute [censored]. I can barely concentrate/ sit still long enough to make this post.

Anyway my personal thought is at worst mixed state bipolar disorder at best a mix of anxiety and depression. Does this sound about right? Who do go talk to about diagnosing me: a doctor or a psychiatrist? Is a nurse practitioner okay? Also I dont have insurance. Does anybody know of any programs where i can get meds at a free/discounted?

O yeah one more thing. My mom's side of the family basically all have depression problems (which i fould out recently talking with my sister). Any help anyone can give is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like depression, you raise a lot of the flags for it. I would see a psychiatrist or a general practitioner. Don't really know about cheap med programs for mental health.

A GP won't help, you need a psychiatrist as you don't have textbook anxiety/depression. You need further monitoring because its possible you have a mood disorder as well. Easily medicated by a competent psychiatrist but get help soon. Don't do anything novel or make any life altering decisions in this state, stay in the company of family if possible and avoid anything that induces the anxiety. If your tired its fine to spend time in bed until you are properly medicated. GL.

GP's don't know [censored] about mental illness.

Go see a specialist. Some couseling, along with some drugs from the Psych would probably help too.

Your symptoms are consistent with a severe sleep disorder. Make an appointment at a sleep clinic.

Many people with sleep disorders go undiagnosed for years because many doctors aren't familiar with them.

You go to someone trained in this kind of thing. You wouldnt go to a foot doctor if you had a brain tumor would you?

Since you dont have insurance try and find a shrink who works on a sliding pay scale, there should be a few in any city.

As far as free drugs or doctors go, you're screwed if you're in the USA.

Not much help, I admit.

I felt the same way most of last year. SSRIs didn't really help. I stopped drinking, lost 30 pounds, started exercising and doing yoga every day, and eating healthy food. I feel a lot better now. Try that.

It took me ten years to tell anyone what you just wrote. Talking about it is the hardest part.

It's sounds like anxiety/depression. The sleep disorter is probably a side effect.

See a doctor, buddy.
