Moving to San Diego

I'm a life-long east-coaster but am seriously considering moving out to San Diego with a couple good friends of mine from DC. Looking for general advice on where to live (I heard Ocean Beach is the spot), and how much I can expect to pay for a *decent*, not necessarily nice, 1-BR apartment within spitting distance of the beach. Also, is there any reason I shouldn't move out there? I have heard nothing but glowing remarks about SD and it all seems to good to be true. Hook up the info.

It's extremely expensive. There's a good reason why though.

I recently moved to the San Diego area.

* Where to live?
- Are you going to be looking for work? Traffic is really bad around rush hour, so if you'll be working, live close to work.
- You'll pay around $1200/mo. for a one bedroom. Down to $700 or $800 if you get a 2bedroom and a roommate.

Bad things about SD:
- It's known as "man diego". All of the military bases in the area bring a ton of young men and it has one of the worst female/male ratios among singles in the country
- The weather is steady, but generally cool. (check out this page for more info http://weather.yahoo.com/climo/USCA0982_f.html)
- There are a ton of foreigners. I personally don't mind, but some do. (Particularly asians, also latinos).

Going out in San Diego is cheaper than the bigger cities. Gaslamp is a great downtown and is one of the things that makes this city great.

Overall I'm thrilled to live here.

You really have to ask specific questions.

Do you surf?
Where are you going to work?
You want chicks and bars and craziness?
You want to live on the beach where its a little bit out from everything?
How much can you afford per month for rent?
Do you mind Traffic?
Have you ever visited?
Do you have any family out there?
Do you realize that it takes half a day to get back to the east coast.
Do you like sports (cause they suck there)?

The lifestyle is ENTIRELY different then East Coast. I am moving back in July and I live in Maryland (right outside DC) now. I have visited almost every 6 weeks over the last year cause I miss it so much.

P.S. raging in DC next Friday

LOL, no. I prefer to live alone, they will prolly get a 2-BR.

EDIT - too add some details im willing to pay up to 12-1300 but would greatly prefer like 1k/mo. I don't surf but am very interested in learning - i know ill love it. I want to live in an area that is close to bars/crazyness but is quiet (I work from home thus won't be seeking employment.) Appreciate all the info so far. Thanks.

How old are u?

Pacific Beach may be a nice fit. Real young crowd, lots to do beach-wise. Good food spots. Little older area (in terms of housing). Great weather, close to beaches, chicks everywhere.

U can get a place for that much. Time to look is now. Summer time no good.

I'm 24. I will be moving feb or march at the latest. Pacific beach sounds money, I heard it was more 'posh' than Ocean beach which is more 'chill' and full of stoners. Tru assesment?
