Defensive Coordinator. Another person from the inside. Anyone know anything about him?

He played ball for Miami in the 1980's, won the best assistant of the year award (can't remember name of it) in 2001 I believe, and is considered to be one of the top defensive minds in college football.\

Edit: Oops, all of that stuff was already said in that link you provided.

Wrong. He will be very very good. He is a hard guy, exactly what the team needed. The defense has always been good under him too. Definitely good.

The team itself will be fine. I really think he is a good guy, and a good guy for Miami. Obviously the offense needs an overhaul and until Cokers recruits leave they will struggle, but he is a good coach and a good guy.

I agree, and it has to do with more than just the Xs and Os.

He's obviously a very good coach. He's also a local guy, young and black, and relates well to the kids. Plus he's "all about the U".

But as mentioned above, an insider may not be best for that program right now. As an organization it's been a mess w/ all kinds of vicious backstabbing among the coaches, etc. If Shannon learned to run a team, to manage one from the previous head coaches, and doesn't get some help or know how to do it differently, they're still going to be a mess.

Did Lamar Smith get to interview?

Just in terms of PR and changing the whole "The U" image, an inside promotion seems like a really bad idea. It also underscores the notion that the state of the program and its facilities are such bad shape that they can't get a better outside candidate.
