Icing the kicker?

Are there any stats kept as to whether there is any advantage to this? I'd guess there isn't any advantage.

Lol, course, as I type this, he misses.

Forgetting that awful kick, I wonder if it will soon become a surprise tactic to not call a timeout there and just flatten him as he expects not to have to kick.

Got curious, and some googling led me to this article:

http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/...3/mathtrek.asp

"Using their model, Berry and Wood calculate that, for an average kicker, the estimated probability of a successful 40-yard kick in sunny weather is 0.759. The estimated probability under the same conditions for an average kicker who has been iced is 0.659."

hahaha I want to see a coach throw out the red challenge flag onto the field before the kick, that would really confuse everyone

So, the .759 takes into account all 40-yard kicks in sunny weather, including when it's 0-0 in the 1st quarter? If so, the comparison is meaningless.

this kickers roundtable article was on the front page of ESPN last week:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/column...amp;id=2661773

icing was one of the six major topics discussed

The article sounded like they compared the success rates of game-tying or game-winning field goal attempts when the opposing team did or did not call a timeout beforehand.

I probably should have not been lazy and read the article.

Looks like a pretty small sample size, though.
