Does a devout mormon have a chance to become president

FYI Mitch Romney is a devout Mormon and a former bishop of the Mormon church. Do you think he actually has a decent shot at the presidency, or could his religion be the downfall of his run

Mormons believe that Native Americans are descended from a group of jews who came to North America in 600 B.C. and became so wicked and evil that god cursed them with dark skin.

That is only the tip of the iceberg wrt to their ridiculous worldview. Who is going to vote for that for president? Believe me if he gets the nomination it will all come out. He'll be confronted about every ridiculous aspect of mormonism and have to address why he subscribes to that kind of nonsense.

Natedogg has it right. If he gets the nomination, ridiculous mormon beliefs will be fodder for the late night talk shows. I doubt he even gets the nomination because of his religion.

Let's hope not.

Then again, what's a president without horrifying and ludicrous religious beliefs? It's unheard of.

so if its going to hurt him when running for president why didn't it hurt him when running for Gov in the liberal state of Mass?

People aren't saying his religion will turn off liberal voters. They're more saying his Mormonism will turn off evangelical Christian voters.

You said it yourself. Mass is liberal. And seemingly less devout than the battleground Republican states that Romney needs in the primaries. States with a whole of lot Baptists etc. that aren't buddy buddy with Mormonism.

Percentage of Americans attending a Christian church and given weekend, by State.
