anyways, those who have seen this movie, I have a question. You guys saw the rat in the very last scene by the window, just when Mark Wahlberg finishes off Matt Damon. Was the rat just symbolic for the whole film, or was Mark Wahlberg the "3rd rat".

We know that Jack Nicholson put 2 rats in the police department, even though Matt damon thought he was the only rat. Could it be that both the rats didnt know that there was a 3rd rat....aka Mark Wahlberg.

Just food for thought. what do you guys think ?

if your theory is correct, why would wahlberg kill damon? and why would he quit the state police? simplest explanation is that damon's wife tipped off wahlberg based on di caprio's evidence.

if walberg's character was a third rat then nicholson's character did a [censored] job of utilizing him.

Unless I missed something, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to think Dignam was a mole. The rat is just a symbol of Sullivan and the movie in general, similiar to the rats used in Costello's drawing.

obviously, but I think it's simpler than that. It's really just Scorsese showing he still has a has a sense of humor.

Walberg was a good guy. After Leo's death, the GF opened the package and contacted Walberg, who went vilgiante.

Atleast that's how I interpreted it.

def something fishy w/ walberg there, but i don't think this is it. any other theories on why he killed damon? makes no f'n sense to me.

also why did damon kill that other cop/rat?

[/ QUOTE ]
at first I thought walberg had killed damon because he'd gone crazy from the leave of absence but I guess his murder was too well thought out for that. maybe the gf tipped him off like others said.

damon likely killed the other mole because he couldn't have an accomplice because it would take power away from him.

personally I didn't really buy the idea of there being other rats in costello's operation and in the SIU, it seemed contrived.
