Where to understand accounting...

I'm starting to focus a little more on investing and the like however I really feel that my knowledge base would be much more solid if I had some more accounting knowledge. Could anyone sugguest a good accounting starter? Or should a standard text book/idiot's guide be sufficent enough for more situations?

Accounting, per se, has very little to do with investing. What do you care as an investor that an asset is a debit and needs to go on the left hand side, while a sale is revenue and a credit so it needs to go on the right? Or that each has a corresponding entry on the opposite side?

Understanding financial statements, OTOH, is very important but it should be pretty easy to find instruction on those on the web or your local library/bookstore.
