Help Me Get My Script Back

Hey guys,

I'm a screenwriter who uses a special script program called Sophocles. The program saves files in a specific script format that only it can read. So the other day I got an error message saying it didn't create my script file and couldn't read it. I checked the file out on my computer and it was listed as 0kb. It seems as if the file had somehow been erased or saved over with a blank page.

I think the problem occured because I just left the program and at some point the auto-save screwed up. I've gotten strange error messages before but it's never caused any problem. Is there any way I can get the file back? I've emailed their tech support but haven't gotten any response. I'd love any help. Thanks.

Odds are over 90% than unless you have a backup, you are SOL.

[edit]
I should qualify that. Look in the directory and see if there is a .bak file or something similar. Some programs save backups under a different name.

That said, I know nothing of your software. Sounds like a bug. And if there isn't a backup of some sort, the odds of recovering it via the operating system, or some sort of undelete are pretty slim.

you might find a copy in the 'temp' folder. It would have a different name, probably just numbers and special characters, but if you look in temp for a file with the approximate date of you file you might at least find a partial.

The program does make backups and the backup is the same way.

Exactly what temp folder am I looking for? Is there a quick way to find it?

Well, word for instance creates a temp file in the same folder as the original but then deletes it when the actyual file is closed.

two things
1. to find the temp system temp folder you can type 'set' at a C:> prompt it will list where the temp folder are among other environment variables.
for instance my temp folders are

TEMP=C:\DOCUME~1\Dad\LOCALS~1\Temp
(C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Local Settings\Temp)

2. Download the utility 'Restoration Version 2.5.14'
its a free XP file restore utility, then look to see if any recent copyes of the file or temp files have been deleted and can be restored
