Without a PFR from this guy I found it hard to put him on anything other than a rough Ace and was concerned only holding a two myself - but I am still wondering if I should have bet this river.

No, I'm betting because if he's come this far, he'll call with any pair.

Sometimes he'll have a bigger ace and I'll find that I've been betting his hand for him the whole way, but if that never happens, you're not value-betting enough.

I would be betting here. It would be easier with some reads but you would think he would have bet the flop if he had an ace.
