Chip counts updated through RFID?
 

I know that others have said that cardplayer in particular is not doing a very good job of publishing accurate chip counts ( this sounds like typical cardplayer) but accurate or not they are coming quickly. Anyone know if WSOP/Harrah's is using the new fangled RFID chips with the frequency thingy inside?

Highly doubtful. The cost would be exceptionally prohibitive.

One of the big problems with RFID is that you can't tell *exactly* where the item is. Yeah, Wal Mart knows that the skid has 500 boxes of cereal and 100 boxes of Froot Loops. But someone has to break it down to find out exactly where those 100 boxes are located.

Or, in WSOP speak, "That table has 125,000 in chips. If you want to know how many seat 1 has go over and count them."

Granted, you could put readers at each seat at the table but that's a lot of $$$. Anyone else think it's impossible that Harrah'$ would be willing to shell that out?

Actually the technology will allow them to determine where the chips are - not just down to the table, but to which position they are on the table.

This technology IS coming for sure - it is just a matter of when the cost gets low enough for casinos to do this. For tournaments there would be a lot of advantages, such as ensuring that chips do not get taken off of the table, accurate chip counts in real-time, etc.

I don't think that it will necessarily be in place in the next 2-3 years, but I would say definitely sometime in the next 10.

CardPlayer has lots of people walking around who check on counts of people.

I may be in the minority, but I think they do a pretty good job, all things considered. What more can you really expect?

I was there during some events and the whole room can be a zoo. I'm amazed how they not only get the chipcounts but lot's of interesting and informative stories. The live experience of the Amazon room is great but to get fast and good overall information Cardplayer is a great source.

Actually some casinos already use them for general use, and they are planning to have them next year for the WSOP.

you would need player rfid cards as well as rfids in every chip. this adds about 25 cents to the cost of every chip and a few hundred dollars to the cost of every table, plus the cost of the tracking infrastructure. it's not cost effective for an event like this yet.
