Online poker in Europe

Does anyone know how the tax laws would apply for a U.S. citizen moving to Italy/Europe? Do you pay taxes to the U.S. or the country you're living in?

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure the answer is both since poker income isn't "earned" income. Normally you would be able off set the US taxes with other taxes if you had a "real" job. Kinda sucks.

I will be working in Italy - but I can't imagine someone would have to pay taxes on poker winnings to both countries - or is this the cold hard truth......

This answer is only based on "hear-say" knowledge, however:

I have heard you can live outside of the US and not claim earnings, only if you spend less than 30 days in the states for that givin year.

This could be totally bogus, I was speaking to a guy who is making a crap load of cash as an independent contractor in Iraq. He was certianly savoring his few days hear, and spending the rest of his time off in Costa Rica.

At least you wont be risking your life in your chosen profession.

My understanding of the 30 day thing could be totally off, so ask a pro before you do something drastic.

Talk to a cpa, but it has something to do with time spent living in the location. Like if you live in london for half the year you don't have to pay for a certain part of taxes on your time in london...

this is a complicated issue. You will probably need to consult an expert of international tax law.
If you pm your email i can mail you some documents about this to get you started.
