ROI

Even though being a cashplayer, I occasionally take stabs at MTTs, hoping to score big. I have yet to have my long expected breakthrough however (I am highly disappointed I haven't had luck like that of Jamie Gold), and as result, I figured I'd ask winning MTT players the following question:

When playing MTTs with about 800~ players in it, how often, out of 20 times, do you cash decently? My apologies if this is a stupid question, but I can't help myself but to wonder, as I've played about 7 big tournaments, but not cashed more than double the buyin in any of them

In all seriousness, trying to judge tournament results in 7 tries, is the equivalent of judging cash results after 50 hands.

Look at it this way, if you expect to cash 1.5 times as often as everyone else (which is a good MTT player). You will make good money about 3.5% of the time (final 2 tables). So seeing 100+ MTTs without a big cash isn't that far out of the ordinary for a winning player playing the events you described.

Unless you are playing an insane amount of tournaments, really do your best not to get caught up in your stats. Think of it like a drawing. There are 800 tickets, you have 30 chances to win. If you run the drawing 20 times, you wouldn't be surprised not to win.

and then once you get to the point where good money is really no money and real good money is top 3, it happens even less just gotta roll w the punches

To get a sense of the figures, check out the Stars yearly leaderboard and then go to officialpokerrankings.com and check them out. These guys generally put in the most volume so you can assess ROI and ITM for winning players. The results will make you want to return to cash games.

Then what do winning MTT make the most money on? 40~-hand STTs?
