Smart move I think. If they kick it's a chip shot, if they go for it they will probably get it on 4th and 2. Washington hasn't thrown well so sending them back was good.

Yep, got a blocked FG, plus I imagine the field is a little slippery and tougher to kick longer field goals.

Because those 8-8 and 9-7 teams get blown out before the Super bowl.

They weren't 8-8, but the Steelers in 2005 were a 5 or 6 seed. They won it all. Make a 6 team playoff this year with the 1 and 2 teams getting a bye, and I bet the 6 seed USC wins it all. Doesn't that show why there should be a playoff, to crown the TRUE national champion, or at least one thats really proved itself against the best teams?

depends if you want a champion based on one month or one based on a whole season

At least in the NFL if a good team loses a bunch of key players to injury in the middle of the season, they have a chance to prove themselves when they get healthy if the make the playoffs, unlike college football where you lose your best player for ONE GAME, which causes you to lose a tough game, and YOUR DONE. I know its not like that this season, but generally it is. I really don't think a OSU-Georgia game (making this assumption for my example) accurately determines who the best team in the country is.

you'll never know who the best team in the country is
every title is mythical in some sense

Hell, the NFL acknowledge the Patriots as a Super Bowl Champion in a year I saw them lose a playoff game to the Raiders

In the NBA, I think we know who the best team in the country is most every year. Same with the NFL, 8 or 9 years out of 10?
