Anybody here got a vasectomy?

I'm just wondering about it. Being a broke student the worst thing that could happen to me is get a girl pregnant. It would pretty much kill me and lead me to a life of low wage work with all my dreams pretty much tucked away. I will need a couple more years to finish my studies and get financial stability but in those years a mistake/unfortunate event could happen, the chances are too great!

1. I read of permanent pain after the vasectomy, is this rare? will you be able to function normally after one?
2. If you have insurance in your job would they pay for such a thing? if not how much does it cost?
3. how long does the operation take? how difficult of a procedure is this?

condoms fail sometimes, and sometimes the woman will do things to get herself pregnant by you.

It sounds like you got so much going for you, it's beyond belief that you haven't knocked up a chick yet because she put a pin hole in your condom so you could knock her up and she could take you for all your worth.

Wow, so you want to get a vasectomy just cause you can't have a kid in the next few years?

Or is this just some elaborate level wherein you actually have a good reason for getting the procedure done but are trying to convince us that you're stupid enough to think something as idiotic as described in the OP so we can raise funds for your vasectomy on the grounds that I person that stupid shouldn't be allowed to reproduce?

Re: Anybody here got a vasectomy?

I'm not going to comment on the absurdness of getting a vasectomy at your age, but to give you a little information, I just had one a week ago.

First the general info: The procedure as a whole is about 30-40 minutes. Its outpatient and surprisingly not that painful while it happens, but the recovery period can be a little uncomfortable. The most you feel is getting a shot of local anesthetic on your sack, then some heat while it kicks in. I have not heard of the constant pain part, and mine works just fine. Recovery time is anywhere between 2-7 days, and you can drive home afterwards. You are supposed to take it very easy for a 5-7 days and not do any lifting, exercise or have sex. I basically sat on the couch with frozen peas on my nuts for the whole weekend.

Now for me, the first side went fine according to the book. The second side to dr. had a hard time finding the vas and dug around down there for awhile. That was somewhat painful, but its not terrible because he's not grabbing your ball, its more like pushing and pulling around it to find the vas. He ended up finding it and made an incision, but did not like the grip he had on the clamps, so he let it go. Tried to find it again and eventually got a better grip but had to make a 2nd incision on that side. Once that was done, it was then as normal. It took about a little over an hour for me because of the trouble. Because of that, my recovery has taken 8 days and I'm just today feeling better (had it done Nov 16). It was like a nonstop feeling like you got kicked in the balls. I pretty much have worn a jock strap for 8 straight days. Its still a little sore where the stitches are now , but those are supposed to be dissolved in a couple of more days.

My case is a little strange, and I've had friends who were fine after 2 days and some that took 10 days to feel better. Just depends on how good of a healer you are and how close your vas is to the surface.

My insurance at work covered it. I paid two $35 copays (one for the initial consultation and one for the procedure itself). YCMV.

Now that you know what you are in for, do you really want to go through this?

Technically I had one when I had a hernia when I was four and the operation didn't go exactly as planned. I can't tell you much about it except that it really [censored] with your head when adults decide to explain to you at ten years old that you can't have kids.

I was going to post more about this in the "Do you want children?" thread but got lazy when I realized how long the description of this trauma would be.

from Wikipedia
[ QUOTE ]
The ability to have an erection and an orgasm with a pleasant ejaculation do not seem to be affected unless one suffers from post-vasectomy pain. Because the sperm-filled fluid from the testes makes up only about 10% of an ejaculation, vasectomy does not seem to significantly affect the volume, appearance, texture or taste of the ejaculate.

Getting a vasectomy is not a big deal at all, I was surprised how easy it was. Could even drive myself home after the operation.

Getting a vasectomy for the reasons you list though is asinine.

And before you have one they will schedule a counseling session first, to discuss your reasons for wanting one. They will try to talk you out of it, and at your age, they're right to do so. The reversal process is ten times more difficult and rarley ever works.

Think about it like this : YOU'LL STILL HAVE TO WEAR A CONDOM IN YOUR SITUATION TO PROTECT YOU BOTH FROM DISEASES, SO WHY BOTHER WITH A VASECTOMY SINCE YOU'LL STILL HAVE TO WEAR THE CONDOM ANY DAMN WAY??

So, you get a vasectomy and then down the line you fall in love, get married and want kids. Then what. Reverse vasectomies don't always work. If you do go through with this make damn sure you get some of your ejactulation frozen so you can have YOUR OWN KIDS some day.

Haha at my counseling session, I brought my three kids. They were running around the office, and at one point my 3-year-old tried to push the doctor off of his chair. After reading the boilerplate warnings about it not being reversible, the doc says: "Well, you've convinced me."

I don't think a hernia operation ever requires a vasectomy. Sounds to me like the surgeon screwed up. He probably has grounds for a massive malpractice suit, except statute of limitations has probably expired.

Two weeks ago here. The shot in the sack sucked...as did the trouble he had getting the 2nd side done. The procedure itself was overall a little more uncomfortable than I had probably imagined going in, but my personal recovery was ridiculously easy. I worked the next day and spent 8 hours the day after that at a gymnastics coaching clinic. A little 'tender' for a day or two...and my right one turned a little black & blue, but I feel very fortunate to not have had post-procedure pain/problems.

Yeah, the snip was some sort of mistake. I'm missing a pretty big chunk of one of my balls as well. I'd say it's about half the size of the other one. That was done intentionally as part of the operation, though. Everything works fine down there other than the fact that I can't reproduce.

Even vasectomies are not 100%. Occasionally the ducts grow back together.

Only 100% solution is abstinence.

I can't believe the criticism i am getting from you people. I should be praised rather than insulted. I should be praised for being responsible for my age. I don't want to end up like the countless joes that post in this forum "my girlfriend has bad news" while they add that they work an average job with an average wage and this development means a likely life of poverty.

I don't know what is wrong with wanting to avoid accidents like that. I am being responsible in the way that I acknowledge that I can't support a kid now, nor would I for 8 or so years.

There is more to this of course. I'm good looking and I'm a james bond type can't have just 1 gf, I ask girls out even when having a girlfriend. My luck is what worries me the most I know something as bad as this scenario would happen to me.

How are you being "responsible" by making a decision that could potentially ruin the rest of your life just so things will be a little easier for you right now?

Also, you are being paranoid. I have never seen the sort of post you are describing. And with respect to women secretly thwarting birth control: unless you are about to declare for the NBA or NFL draft, no one want to have your baby that badly.

As far as I can tell, you are trying to AVOID being responsible. You don't want to have to be responsible and practice safe sex and what not, so you want a vasectomy. Just either don't have sex, or wear a condom and have her take the pill. You should be fine.

I praise you. I think it is a very mature decision. Don't put yourself in a situation you don't want to be in. I know 2 guys personally whose gfs stop taking birth control and did not tell them. They are fathers now, and one of the gfs ran off, so he is 100% caregiver.

I got one at age 32 when single and childless. I never regretted it. The piece of mind is worth a weekend of pain.

Look for studies at the local university if you don't have insurance or it won't cover the procedure. It got mine done at the University of Washington Urology Clinic for free. They even paid me $75 per week to jerk it so they could see how long before I shot blanks.

In the future, one hopes there are nearly 100% effective temporary birth control options for men. In the meantime I think men like you who are certain they want to avoid an unwanted pregnancy are doing the right thing by getting snipped.

Good luck.
