I Screwed It Up

I screwed it up, please tell me where I went wrong.

4/8 Limit Commerce Casino

Table was new and this was the 3rd hand dealt.

Hero: BB with 8s6d

1 EP: calls
2 EP :calls

1 LP: calls
SB: calls

Hero: checks
5 plyrs to the flop
5 small bets

Flop: 10c 6s 4d

Everyone checks to Hero who bets.

1 EP: calls
3 EP: raises

1 LP: folds
SB : calls

Pot = 9 small bets

Hero: folded

I just didn’t think a 66’s with 8 was a good enough hand to continue on with, especially with two players to beat.

I probably should have checked on the Flop, but my thinking was remain aggressive.

Looking forward to the replies on where I went wrong.

Don't bet the flop. That was pretty bad. Once you get raised though, you need to call that extra bet and take a look at the turn.

You should have just c/f the flop. It's a nothing pot and there's no reason to get involved.

Yeah, don't bet the flop. You've got middle pair against 4 people in a small pot. Once you do bet the flop, though, you've gotta pay 1 more to draw at your (presumably) 5 outs.

Don't just be aggressive for aggressive's sake. Be aggressive when you have a good (but vulnerable) hand and you want to make it unprofitable for others to continue, or you have a great draw with lottsa players in the pot and possibly have a chance at getting a free card, or you have a great made hand and you're trying to get as much money in the pot as possible, etc.

I simply check this flop and see what happens. If it comes back to me closing the action near 8:1 then I might peel (is this good?), otherwise I just dump it and move on.

So a theory question, then: What's the worst holding you bet out from the BB in this spot?

Is having any overcard with our middle pair (e.g. J6) enough to justify betting out to "protect our hand"? How about A6/K6? Given the small pot, do we even bother betting TPNK (e.g. T2) or 77 here?

I ask because I hate playing small pots out of position - so I probably check more than I should here - but the combination of "might improve if behind" plus "dry board where opponents will fold anything that missed" probably equals some equity I'm missing out on.

If you have enough of a made hand to justify overcalling when it gets back to you, consider making the bet yourself. A6 would qualify. 77 would not, nor would T2--in the first case, you likely have 5 outs to a winner & may have the best hand already. In the latter cases you are likely drawing to 2 and 3 outs, respectively, and sometimes dead.
