New Zealand - what to do?
 

I am going to NZ for 3 weeks in January.

Am flying into and out of Auckland. Will be hiring a car.

What are the things I should not miss?

Sorry for hijacking your thread but was just thinking of starting one too [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img].

I'm flying to new zealand probably after the macau tournament. Probably staying 1-3months. Any recommendations for apartments with adsl/wifi in priceclass ~1k usd. In which part of new zealand should i move?

Are there any livegames there? How big stakes?

I've only spent time on the South Island, but that's where the majority of NZ's stuff is from what I've heard.

You'll fly into Christchurch. No need to spend much time there.

Nearby Banks Penninsula makes an interesting daytrip from Christchurch. Akaroa is a nice little town, and the whole area is very picturesque.

To the north is Kaikoura. Interesting landscape and opportunities to see whales and dolphins en masse. Big mountains nearby.

Abel Tasman is on the north of the island. Sea kayaking.

Glacier climbing (Fox or Franz Joseph) is on the west coast (among other places), on the western side of the southern alps.

Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound are on the southwestern corner in Fjordland. Definitely worth the trip.

Queenstown has adventure sports, bars, etc, and is very scenic. You can climb/hike up mountains too.

Lake Pukaki and Lake Tikapo are in the center, on the east side of the alps. Big, jagged mountains, nice hiking, etc. Not very developed at all.

You should download google earth and check out 3D images of these places, then start to pick the ones that look most interesting to you.

Boat trip through Milford sound is amazing. There is a hostel right at Milford sound that is pretty nice. Call ahead to make sure there is room available though, especially if you don't want to bunk with other people. It's also a bonus if you can do the boat tour in the rain because tonnes of spontaneous waterfalls appear all over the place.

also renting a campervan from Britz is the nuts if you want to drive around a lot and not have to worry about where you're going to stay for the night.

Ferry ride from North to South island is also pretty sweet imo.

I live in New Zealand. Definitely check out the Bay of Islands, Bay of Plenty (Whangamatand Mt Maunganui), and Milford Sound.

I live here too, I agree with Joe about those places. I'd add Queenstown and Rotorua for touristy things.

Re Chain chomp. live poker here is crap, (in auckland and other skycity casinos don't know about christchurch) the rake is crazy big

[/ QUOTE ] 1 casino, spreads $1/$2 PLO/PLHE mix regularly, along with $4/8 and $10/20 LHE/LO mix (I think the limit game had omaha high--I know it wasn't LO8--so I didn't bother playing it). This was 18 months ago and I hope they've gotten over the omahahaha by now. Queenswtown has some casinos--one with poker--but I didn't play.

Rake was high but the people sucked.

lots to do but it is all outside. the best stuff is on the south island. hit all the tourist spots then find the good ones, like places where the penguins come up on the shore at dusk and isnt full of people in bleachers.

drive to wellington and take the ferry to picton

fish in crystel clear waters and have to stalk your fish or not get one.

hike some of the famous tracks like the milfod or greenstone.

buy some detol or the sand flies will eat you alive.

bungee jump at skippers

white water raft

learn about the maori people

I'd do the south island first, since that has some of the best touristy bs, and then head to the north island once you're over the south.

(I don't have any recommendations as to what to do, I guess living here I don't care about doing some of the tourist stuff ;D)
