My co workers are effin nosy

Ok, I work a government job. No one really works more than 40 hours. Its an easy job. The office I work in is totally subject to the whims of another government department. So sometimes we are overloaded, and sometimes I only have 5 hours worth of real work in a 40 hour week. And theres not a lot I can do about it. Needless to say, there are times when I spend all day on the internet.

I also should note that I have a reputation as the hardest worker in the office...LOL. I developed that reputation by working my arse off when my boss was out for 4 months. I did her job and my job and worked 13 hours a day during that time. Now I've worked in private industry in the past. I've worked and been around people who own their own business. I am well aware of what hard work really is...80 to 100 hour weeks and basically on call the rest of the time. What I did is a normal work load for a salaried employee in private industry. But to lifetime government employee donks, 13 hours a day for four months is a "workaholic".

Anywho, some of the nosier people in the office constantly stare into my cubicle and report to the supervisors that I am on the internet all the time. I think they are jealous over the recognition I get. And of course the supervisors don't say anything because its rare in government to get an employee who will do all work and not complain. They are happy with me and couldn't care less that I break minor rules. My work is always the highest quality in my unit and I never need supervision or help. If there is a problem, I always handle it proactively(ie bring it to their attention, not vice versa). So the supervisors trust me a great deal.

Still, it p-o's me that I always feel eyes on back(anyway I can see the people being nosy in the reflection off my monitor). All effin day long. Freakin people have NOTHING better to do but check up on me. Anyone else have nosy co-workers?

People really tattle on you for surfing the web? Wow, that's lame.

There's always one in the office. I had one, she was horrible. My friend's desk was right in front of the copier machine and whenever that lady would go make copies, she'd take her sweet time doing it. She'd literally stand there and stare at my friend while my friend was talking on the phone or with another co-worker.

I have many stories of that lady. She still pisses me off to this day.

Every workplace is full of assholes like this. I ignore it unless they happen to be management. Then I find a new job.

Maybe people don't actually think of you as a hard worker, but an ass kisser. Either way, a co worker who reports you for something like that isn't nosy, they just have no respect for you.

1 stopped the nosy crap by turning off my graphics, so no pics show up and it looks more like a program and also you can peruse NSFW threads without fear

I think these around $300, but 3M makes some kick-ass privacy screens.

Dude, it could be worse. I got drunk and boned a co-worker once. Try having everyone in your office find out about that.

If you have Firefox, go to "Tools/Options". When that window pops up, you can block all images from loading. You can also set the option that only images from the originating website will show up. This keeps the site looking normal, but without any outside images.

Most (95%?) government bureaucracy workers are like this, especially if you're younger than them. I worked as a contractor with federales in the DOI for almost three years, and they are all about making everyone ELSE follow the rules to the hilt. We were accused of taking too many napkins from the kitchen (?) so they made us bring in our own kitchen supplies. And of course we passed that cost on to the taxpayer. We moved into a new building that had a gym, and the head woman in that entire building wouldn't let contractors use the gym for six months.

Every week was something different. Hanging out in the kitchen too much. Talking on the phone too much. Putting fans up in our cubes even though the temperature was 80 in the afternoon. Never mind that all the federales did this tenfold. Welcome to the clan.

My friend sitting right here is a DOD contractor, and he agrees. One federale that he worked with pissed everyone off so much that his boss put him in a back office and delegated all his responsibility. So this guy set up a bar in his office. Nice.

LOL, this describes it to a T.

I'm 20 years younger than at least 20 people in the office(there are about 60 of us here). I make the same wage, and am more likely to promote soon than any of the older people.

You sound like you work in my office. Lately I've been "working" 37.5 hours a week and 36 of it is being spent in OOT.

It goes from being really busy for 2 months (where I still only work 37.5 hours a week, but it's spent actually working), to 2 months of complete inactivity. If it wasn't for the lunch-time poker game, I would have a really hard time convincing myself to come in every day.

I started using this after one of the useless HR drones at my last job ratted to my manager for internet use. Not only does it not show images, you can open it within another app (e.g. Outlook)
