Famous classical violinist plays in subway station - No one notices
Washington Post article
Cliffs notes: One of the top classical violinists in the world plays his $3.5m violin in a Washington D.C. subway station. His violin case is next to him, awaiting donations. Very few stop to listen or notice him(although children attempt to). Even fewer give money(total haul=$32.17). DN |

Is this any surprise? A lot of the reason people like things is because they are popular. If they don't know they are popular they are less likely to care. Had everyone known that he was one of the top violinists no doubt there would the crowds around him and he would have made a lot more, but I bet less than 1% of the population knows anything about who the top violinists are.

The only thing that really surprised me is that a violin can be worth $3.5 million. WTF is that?

When it was over, Furukawa introduced herself to Bell, and tossed in a twenty. Not counting that -- it was tainted by recognition -- the final haul for his 43 minutes of playing was $32.17. Yes, some people gave pennies. [/ QUOTE ] |
