Dell E1705 with two monitors?

Can I use two monitors with this laptop if I am not using the laptop display? I can't get it to work.

try closing the lid while both monitors are plugged in.

It shuts down when I close the lid even if I am not using the laptop display. There is also no way to turn the laptop on without opening the lid.

Most laptops have a button on one of the function keys to switch between the builtin LCD and an external display.
