NCAAF Week 9

with BC v V Tech tonight, I think it's time to start the weekly thread

According to the gambling markets, there is less than a 10% (8.3%) chance all 4 BCS teams remain unbeaten after this week.

The tests start tonight.

I expect a low scoring game for BC-V Tech, but the extra few days of prep might lead to a few unexpected offensive big plays.
BC's rush defense is solid. V Tech cannot do much but run.

V Tech might have the best corners in the game v Matt Ryan's heisman hopes.
Last year, V Tech's defense, which is known for sacks, didn't get to Ryan at all. I'm curious to see if BC can repeat that this year under a new coach and a switch to a zone blocking scheme.

I think the key of the game is the success of BC running the ball. If they can run, V Tech is in trouble. Otherwise, this one should go down to the wire.

Re: NCAAF Week 9

This weekend has some awesome games.

PSU-OSU will be sweet. It'll be loud, loud, loud and will tell us more about OSU than we've learned all year. If Morelli doesn't lay an absolute egg, this could be a great game. PSU's offense has actually improved since Austin Scott got dismissed and I could see this game turning out much like 2005 -- a low scoring PSU win. This game hinges on Morelli.

USC-Oregon and Cal-ASU are both really intriguing that should go a long way to shaping up the Pac 10 race and who will contend for the BCS games out of that conference. I think Oregon will get it done since they're at home and I don't think Sanchez is quite good enough to win a game of this stature yet. I don't know enough about ASU to really make a call there.

Boise State is kind of out there, but they also have an important game this weekend. If they beat Fresno State and run the table coupled with a good win against Hawaii, what bowl games would they be looking at?

As far as Michigan v. Minnesota goes, if Hart and Henne are on the field for more than about 1.5 quarters, I'm going to be pissed.

definitely the weekend for the Pac10 to get some attention

Very excited for this game tonight.

As for tOSU, I think it all comes down to Morelli. His is totally schitzo...but usually much better at home.

looking forward to RU vs WVU. I think wvu is a terrible matchup for them, but if they win this one I would consider them favorites to win the big east.

I don't know about the whole horrible matchup for them. I feel like the strength of Rutgers tends to be in their DL and safties(if Greene is healthy this week). I feel like this will allow them to leave a LB to spy White. I actually feel more confident about this game than the USF game.

Of course, the game is going to be on Mike Teel's shoulders again. He has to step up big in a big game eventually, right? I really think Rutgers goes to UCONN next week with the Big East riding on that game(wait did I just say that UCONN is going to beat USF??? I must be nuts!)

BTW, any BC fans want to comment on if Brian Toal is coming back this season? I think it would be a mistake considering I feel like it would destroy his draft status. If he takes a medical redshirt he can get healthy and be a top LB next year.

Yes, and by the looks of it he is going to set Nebraska's program back several more years.

Nitpicking but...

How can the official mark that punt out at the 25 when the VT player standing 4 feet out of bounds caught the ball at the 25? Do officials even give a [censored] anymore?

agreed

I also have to laugh that it was a 5 yd running into the kicker after watching Illinois get a 15 yarder last week for about 1/10th the contact

Re: NCAAF Week 9

Christ, if you are gonna run a comeback route, run it to the first down marker. I hate when RB/WR's do that. BC wake up please.

That is going to be challenged but, wow, great punt.

Re: NCAAF Week 9

Wow, I take that back no way that ball broke the plane. Talk about a lucky ass roll for BC and very unlucky for VT.

I always wonder what a playaction deep ball would do on the inch line.

You don't touch Zoltan. He made you pay by forcing your return man to drop that ball with the crazy spin he put on it.

That said, am I the only one who doesn't really like incredibly rainy games? I like night games a lot, but the rain just makes things really sloppy.

Why is it that when it starts raining teams from the East Coast seem to act like scoring or even moving the ball is suddenly impossible? It was raining quite hard in Seattle last Saturday... I'm just saying...

I'm gonna say the fact that its raining might have a touch to do with it. But I am a believer that in the rain the offense has a huge advantage over the defense. Esepcially on the line.

Ryan and BC need to test V Tech deep to open up the middle and underneath routes

V Tech isn't dropping anyone really

Actually what happens is when it starts raining most coaches panic and change the gameplan they set up the whole week. Did BC really plan on trick plays all week? I doubt it, unless they really really wanted to make or break the 1st quarter by getting an early score and quieting this crowd.

I'm pretty sure BC paniced with their game plan and has been lucky to not give up a score yet.

VaTech, stop getting pretty with those passes, THOSE HOGS UP FRONT WANT TO RUN!

Edit: well they have to keep their feet when they are blocking.

terrible unsportsmanlike penalty call

just awful

everyone does that sort of stuff

it's a penalty for all or not at all

that is an official inserting himself where he doesn't need to

Re: NCAAF Week 9

I feel like the Ref thought that the DL was doing it to an offensive player. I actually had no problem with it because I thought he was too.

Franchise 60 10-25-2007 08:34 PM

Re: NCAAF Week 9

Its def harder to throw the ball with the same success in the rain as you can in good weather, so I wouldn't really kill Ryan if he has looked bad. VT's very good defense also has a lot to do with it though. That being said it isn't impossible to throw the ball in the rain, just makes it a bit more difficult.

I agree with Needle about the advantage for the Offense, and I think that is mainly in the running game. I don't think the offensive line has an advantage in pass pro blocking in bad weather, more of a disadvantage, but it really isn't that big of a deal if the field is kept in good form.

MyTurn2Raise 10-25-2007 08:35 PM

Didn't we learn last week that, that is clearly offensive pass interference?
