Couldn't find one, so I figured I'll start my own.

Couple notes I heard on the radio today:

Mike Cameron will be suspended 25 games for violating the MLB drug policy for a banned stimulant.

Joe Torre has been offered a deal around $14.5 for 3 years.

White Sox declined options on Mike Myers and Darin Erstad (hurray, Kenny did something right).

St. Louis promoted Mozeliak, meaining Chris Antonetti stays in Cleveland. As a Tribe fan, this is fantastic...Shapiro+Antonetti is the new Beane+DePo.

?? They're supposed to re-sign Alou, let Green walk, play Milledge. They really don't need Fukudome, with Gomez and the other OF prospect I'm too lazy to look up in the pipeline.

EDIT: Alou kept for 7.5 mil, Dunn kept for $13.5

You are under the assumption that Milledge and Gomez are kept and the assumption is that one if not both might be traded. If thats the case it would be pretty hard to play them if they were traded.

Vyse 10-31-2007 05:49 PM

Re: ***Official 2007-2008 MLB Offseason Thread***

Except it's way more likely Milledge is kept than they sign Fukudome.

They're much more likely to spend any available money they have on pitching, esp since they just lost Glavine. Beltran: signed long-term. Alou: $7.5 mil for next year. Milledge + Gomez are cheap OF options for the next five years, and Fernando Martinez is another high-upside OF they have in the minors. Fukudome makes zero sense.

Minaya has said a million times, quite vehemently, that Gomez is going nowhere. He loves him.

This is the standard Rondell White/Tony Batista/ guy with little upside we hope can regain his mediocre form of previous years move we make every year.
Monroe is a close buddy of Torii.
I really hope that played a factor in making this move.

White Sox trade Jon Garland to Anaheim for Orlando Cabrera and "cash considerations".

This seems like an awful deal for the ChiSox.

Macier Izturis. Would make him a great late round fantasy grab btw.

I don't think this is a bad deal for the Sox. Uribe is not a good everyday SS, and Garland is just a mediocre innings eater. The Sox have a few young guys in their system who could replace Garland. I'm just not sure what the Angels see in Garland.

MikeyPatriot 11-19-2007 02:27 PM

Re: ***Official 2007-2008 MLB Offseason Thread***

Garland's been an average-to-above-average MLB starter. Cabrera is a below average shortstop.

I don't mind trading Garland, I just don't think Cabrera is a good return. I also have no idea what direction Kenny is taking this team. I also feel like if you're trading Garland now, you should have traded him last year for the couple of deals that we're out there.

My friend told me Bruce Levine, one of the baseball beat guys in Chicago radio, said Kenny has a laundry list of stuff he plans on getting done this year. So, I guess this is just a catalyst for more.

Re: ***Official 2007-2008 MLB Offseason Thread***

The Sox save 3 mil on the contract swap and there's more money going their way, so you can't really judge this deal until we find out a) how much money that is, and b) how they spend the $3M+

What? Orlando Cabrera is not a below-average shortstop in any sense of the word. A career line of .273/.321/.403 while turning in pretty good defense year after year is tough to find.

That being said, Uribe is not significantly worse. Not really sure why they did this.

I'm scratching my head on this one for both teams, so I'll reserve judgement until I see what happens next.

Step 1: Trade Orlando for Garland
Step 2: ????
Step 3: MIGUEL!!!

On another note, espn's rumor central says the Blue Jays have offered Scott Clement a minor league deal, but I'm having trouble figuring out who we're cutting from the staff as it is. Right now, we have;

Halladay
Burnett
McGowan
Marcum
Litsch

Frasor
Tallet
Jansen
Downs
Accardo
Ryan (mlb.com's ricciardi interview suggested he'd be ready for opening day)

That's a full staff, and then we still have;

Chacin
Wolfe (0.99 whip, 2.98 era in 38 appearances.)
Towers
Joe Kennedy

The fourteen position player spots seem to be pretty much done with a bench of Scutaro, Stairs, Lind, Adams and Thigpen/Fasano.

Just like you getting Merri-leveled in that thread, it's early. I just looked up his OPS+ and saw < 100 and thought, "LOL below average." I'm definitely wrong about that.

Still agree that I don't get this move. Like I said though, apparently there is supposedly a long list of stuff happening.

What? In 2005 when chacin was healthy and when he put up good numbers K/9 5.3, BB/9 3.1, GB .41. This past year McGowan K/9 7.9, BB/9 3.3, GB .53.

McGowan is one of the top 10 starters in the AL, Chacin is replacement level. Chacin's 2005 ERA was a BABIP/LOB% fluke.

Jays starting lineup;

C Zaun
1B Overbay
2B Hill
SS MacDonald
3B Glaus
O Rios
O Wells
O Johnson
D Thomas

As was said, McGowan is a monster in waiting. Chacin vs Litsch might be arguable, though I'd give it to Litsch after his year last year.

Litsch was insanely lucky last year but his minor leauge numbers were pretty good so he could get better. How long do you think before Synder/Lind replaces Reed Johnson? The guy's a "gamer" and his defense is good but he's only ever had one good offensive season (two if you count 03 when he was just about average).

Re: ***Official 2007-2008 MLB Offseason Thread***

There have been rumblings about Lind getting traded because of the lack of space and I have to think Snider's at least two years away (A ball in '07). If Lind sticks around, I have to think the job is his in '09 and maybe even later '08. Reed was great in '06 (.319/.390/.479) and awful in '07 (.236/.305/.320, due in large part to injuries) so it depends on which one shows up.

They won't move Uribe to 2B because they have Richar ready to take over at 2B. I am not sure what kind of trade market there would be for a player like Uribe.
