rule for showing hands ?
 

I could not find the rule for showing cards at the
end of a hand (in hold'em). Does the player to the
left of the button need to show first? What are the
options for mucking after all betting is completed?

"8. If everyone checks (or is all-in) on the final betting round, the player who acted first is the first to show the hand. If there is wagering on the final betting round, the last player to take aggressive action by a bet or raise is the first to show the hand. In order to speed up the game, a player holding a probable winner is encouraged to show the hand without delay. If there are one or more side pots (because someone is all-in), players are asked to aid in determining the pot winner by not showing their cards until a pot they are in is being settled."

Feel free to muck at any time. However, if you are in the hand at showdown and muck, any player at the table can ask to have your hand shown as per this rule:

"5. Any player who has been dealt in may request to see any hand that was eligible to participate in the showdown, even if the opponent's hand or the winning hand has been mucked. However, this is a privilege that may be revoked if abused. If a player other than the pot winner asks to see a hand that has been folded, that hand is dead. If the winning player asks to see a losing player’s hand, both hands are live, and the best hand wins."

I noticed that in all in situations a player not in the hand will ask the dealer to show everyone's cards. Is this appropriate? I thought the only time you should ask a dealer to do this is if you suspect cheating.

No your allowed do it, but only a [censored] would actually ask too see all hands.

if there was a bet on the final card, the bettor is required to show first. If everyone checked then the first person to act must show. If it is your turn to show, mucking without showing is acceptable.

There is no penalty however for showing cards out of turn after the last action. The commonality is for whoever feels they have the best to go ahead and showdown regardless of position. If a player sees he is beaten prior to showing he may muck his hand without showing.

As far as asking to see mucked cards the rule is varied from casino to casino. Most will allow any player at the table to ask to see any players cards if he called (or made) the last bet. Cesars Palace is one that will not grant this request unless collusion with another player is suspected. They will not allow it to merely gain information.

I do, when the players sit there at Showdown, for 45 seconds, staring down each other, over a $15 pot, afraid to show their cards.

The rules does allow you to do that even if the players who are all-in don't want to. The rule is there to prevent cheating and really that's the only reason it should be used.

Like in many sports and competitions, there are some rules or plays within the rules that can irritate other players when they are invoked or used. Think Alex Rodriguez yelling "mine" when rounding second base and things like that. In poker, this is one of them. It's the source of much controversy in the poker world since many players simply use this rule to gain information and have no suspicion of cheating. They see this rule as a tool to use at their own free will.

I personally save my use of this rule for somebody that needs a KITN.
