I think some people are confused, TV POKER IS DYING not the game of poker!

Poker as a game and sport is very strong and continues to grow in terms of popularity. TV poker on the other hand is showing signs of dying to the point a lot of poker tv shows we see now might be long gone in a couple of years.

I think home game poker might be on the downslope as well. The sale of poker chips and other home poker products has collapsed in the past year, leading to the folding of several major gaming companies. Still seems like casinos are doing good business though.

Anyone in the U.S. and/or Canada who needed a chipset bought one during the 2004 Christmas selling season.

There was no reason for anyone in the U.S. and/or Canada to buy another set in 2005 or 2006.

I expect chip set sales to peak in the European continent, namely Germany and France, in 2006.

East Asia will be a 2008 or 2009 story.

Australia (population 21 million, relatively small) parallels Europe right now.

Australia will be in position to capture some of the overflow activity when poker hits East Asia in 2008 and/or 2009, given that Sydney and Melbourne are only two time zones away from China and Singapore.

Anyone who says poker is dying doesn't know what they're talking about. See http://www.pokerpages.com/ppii/ for live tournament traffic, and Poker Site Scout for online traffic.

Bravo CPS is on indefinite hiatus. NBC Universal tried to position Bravo CPS as a "WPT Killer" by airing CPS Tournament 8 from New Orleans directly opposite the WPT for 6 weeks. The resulting TV ratings for Bravo CPS Season 8 were predictably lousy.

The UPC is still around, airing on WGN SuperStation on Saturdays at 3am ET as a time-buy. UPC Season 3 Part 2 will be taped at Binions in Las Vegas starting October 14, with buy-ins reduced from $550 to $340 for the entry-level tourneys in order to attract recreational players. (I will definitely play 2 events: October 14 and 15, when the "varsity" is over at the WPT at the Bellagio so that I will be up against the "JV", plus some of the FullTilt pros who are skipping the WPT.)
