Toughest school to get into debate (Cal Tech vs. Harvard)

A kid I know claims that Cal Tech is hardest to get into than at Harvard with a 1% (!) acceptance rate and that Harvard is not even in the top 5 of toughest schools to get into. The source of his information is from one kid he knows who goes to Cal Tech, however, he also presents an argument that Cal Tech has less spots and less applications. I think the applicant pool for Cal Tech is probably "better".

Regardless, I think neither of these schools are the toughest. West Point or Juliard has the most stringent requirements.

this is the Princeton Review's list as of July 2006. Might be an updated version out there I just did a quick google search.

2. Yale University

3. Princeton University

4. Harvard College

5. Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering (Needham, Mass.)

6. California Institute of Technology

7. Columbia University

8. University of Pennsylvania

10. Brown University

Yeah I saw this list too, it was based on a poll right? I'm not sure how scientific this polling is and what the poll even asked.

Yes, much better then princeton review.

Edit: Some intresting stats on Cal

Total applicants who are accepted: 17%
Total of accepted students who enroll: 37%

I wonder what other schools these genius kids are going to instead of Cal?

For West Point 14% of applicants are accpeted.

Other intresting stats.

Freshmen Academic Profile
SAT - Crtiical Reading Middle 50%: 570-670
SAT - Math Middle 50%: 600-690
TPR Projected Range SAT Writing: 620-700
ACT Composite Midldle 50%: 21-36

(much higher for Cal and Ivy Schools)

Julliard only accepts 7% and enrollement is less then 500 kids so I would say this is a good choice.

FWIW my buddy just graduated from Cal Tech, but got differed from Harvard.

It seems to me that most people need connections to get into Harvard.

All of those top schools are messed up though. My buddy got a 1580 on his SATs, a 35 ACT, 4.0 GPA, Number 1 in his class, did really well on some math team, etc etc etc, and still didn't get into Harvard, Stanford or MIT.

Schools like Harvard could fill a class with people with perfect SAT scores, or just valedictiorians. Grades or test scores are not enough. You dont need connections, but you need to be able to bring something to the school beyond just good scores (being awesome at something helps... a sport, an instrument, math, etc).

Cal Tech would admit just straight up intelligence, while Harvard wants the total package. Goblue, was your friend asian?
