I'd still fold third. Check the river.

Agree on 3rd, but why check the river here Andy?

If villian makes/has any pair he's going to call. Wheel looks slim with the cards we are holding.

Given that the villian is 'awful', I'm inclined to bet here.

You are right river is an easy vbet. He will bet any hand that beats you if you check and he will be able to raise you with very few hands that beat you.

Plus you just have a lot of scoop value here.

I'm going to stick with my original recommendation. I doubt that the other guy is going to pay off with one pair every time. Against two pair, we're beaten. A decent chunk of the time, he will make a low, in which case we don't make anything. If we didn't have an open pair, or if we had another low card showing, I would like the value-bet.

Re: Villain is awful

I think an awful player is calling any pair here 100% of the time.

In his mind, it is too easy for us to have (63) or whatever in the hole , say:
(63)A229(river any 4 7 8 T J Q K).

The villian making a low is meaningless for our calculations (except when he makes a wheel).

I doubt strongly he will raise 2 pair.

Any time he makes a pair we make a bet. Any stronger high we lose 1 (maybe 2, flush, funky set if he raises).

I think we get paid off here the vast majority of high hand battles.

Andy, I'm afraid you are wrong here. If you don't believe me, watch how the 30/60 game plays on Stars. There are quite a few players that fit the OP's description of villain, and they will (given how the hand played out until the river) call very frequently with one pair, value bet just about every two pair hand, and raise so infrequently that it doesn't much matter what you do if he does. Check/calling in this spot is a big mistake.

I completely agree, I think checking is terrible the way the board has developed. I checked, almost immediately thought it was probably not so smart and he checked behind a pair of Ts, having started AsTs8s. Aside from the fact this guy probably wasn't folding, I put myself in a spot where I get taken to complete value town and I let the absolute worst player at the table play perfectly against me.

I would not raise on 3rd. i think i would just call 3rd and not raise. i think it is worthwhile to see another card on 4th.

On river, i ould check. Your pair is exposed, he could see your possible hands as such, and this makes it better to check and call. it oesn't look lik the best spot for a value bet here.

Re: Villain is awful

3rd took guts. That's the right play against most players I'd think, but I'd be much happier with a better pair so you don't get overcarded.

I would definitely bet 7th, since you could easily be betting a low + pair. A pair of deuces is not terribly different from ace high, and he would call against that. As the cards fell, your betting is automatic on each street.

Two small pair on the river is often an interesting topic; I'm half considering writing an article about it.
