Long Shot Poker
 

This past week, I was involved in a training exercise that involved a deck of cards, shuffled and posted onto a rail at long distances.

Then, we used long range rifles to play a game of heads up poker.

Each player recieves 7 shots to make the best 5 card hand. Assuming my opponent understands the basic concepts of poker, and will make contact ~85% of the time, what is the best possible strategy to win?

For a while, I was just going to the strategy of attempting to shoot a royal flush, however, after 10 rounds of play, we had tied every round.

Is this beatable from a poker standpoint? Especially if I'm out of position (First to Shoot)?

Why would you go for anything less then the royal flush?
I dont think position matters first to shoot would be best.
My strategy would be try hit the royal in 5 shots and hope one of my opponents misses one card to complete the royal and needs the sixth shot...then I would snipe one of the cards he needs

Going for Boat/Quads while blocking his Straightflush-Outs should work too?

Assuming no misses:
H: Ts Y: 9h
H: Js Y: 9s
H: Qs Y: 9d
H: Ks Y: As

Now it gets tricky. We have 3 Shots remaining. If he pairs one of his cards w/ the 5th, you complete your quads & then snipe off his quad-card. If he snipes off your quad-out in the 5th shot, you hit your boat and he s drawing dead.

this seems like a simple problem. Who needs a royal flush when you can just snipe his cards and prevent him from making one. I would shoot for an ace of spades first and continue shooting aces till I can tell what my opponent is going for and then steal one of his cards to prevent the SF.

if i went second and my opponent shot a Ace of spades, I would just shoot K of spades I guess. Its too early in the morning to figure it out but obviously it is a solvable problem.

Wouldn't it be more interesting if they put up 2 or 3 community cards so you had to give your targets some thought. As the game is structured now, why are they using cards? Because they are too cheap to buy bullseye targets? Just as a silly prop to infuse some interest in at the range?

Wouldn't it be interesting if they gave each shooter 1 private down card. Turned up 2 community cards, then you shot 4 more cards. The second shooter to hit a card would be mucked. Best 5 card hand. $10 a hand wager. Then there would be some Poker involved.

This is no good. Player one then shoots another ace. His full house or quads are going to be better than yours. You won't be able to finish your straight flush in time.

I think you have to consider the order of the cards on the deck to decide the best strategy. If the cards are ordered by rank, if you miss Ad you will probably hit another Ace. If they are ordered by suit, if you miss Qd you might hit Kd or Jd. And if they are random, you would also had to consider how the random shuffle ended on this particular shufle.
