I started late june/ early august, and I was playing 10-20 by november. I have read a few books a few times (right when I started) and read the forums quite a bit since then. I also play a looooooot of hands.

Ive have heard of some people taking a year to get to 10-20 and that seems a bit like a long time, but maybe they have less free time than me

This is the second most important element (playing well is the first).

Also worth thinking about is what kind of bankroll you want to play 10/20 with. Some people dive in with 200BB ready to move down at the first sign of trouble. Other players want 500BB before they even think about sitting down.

Some players never stay at 10/20 for very long since the $ amounts meant too much to them.

At any rate, how long it takes to get to 10/20 - and stay there - is different for everyone.

Some players play well for a certain number of hands to get the $, I, on teh other hand, play mediocre over a large number of hands to get the $

I hope you didnt take my post as bashing you Bright. I was simply pointing out that # of hands someone can play is huge - but nothing if you can't make money at all. I should have made that more clear.

Remember that most who try, do not even make it. Getting good in poker is easy for some, but very hard for others. When you try to explain the game to somebody you notice that some would probably get to 10/20 quite quickly but for others it would be completely hopeless.

bright, u went from .5/1 to 10/20 in a few months?

Thats crazy! It took me a year(ok i took months and months off, and now i find it hard to log 10k a month) to get from 0.02/.04 to $2/4.

Dam i need to take a break and then return and kick some serious ass.

it depends on many factors - how many hands you can play, how you run during this time, how quickly you pick up the game, and maybe most importantly, your risk tolerance and how you run when you take shots.

in other words, if you take a shot at 5/10 6 max with 200 BB's, and run smoking hot, you can move up to a semi-reasonable 10/20 in not much time. if you get hammered during your shot - which can easily happen, even if you're playing ok - you'll be back to square one.

so, you'll need some luck to move up very fast

dear op
it depends...just like everything else in poker. There are no cookie-cutter recipes
how much do you play? how much do you study? how quick do you 'get' things? do you have natural poker ability?
i'm at 5/10 now after a year and a half, but I'm real conservative as this is my job and I need a stable income.
