Song lyrics that either hit home or have personal meaning

No judging based on the bands here, I'm just curious and thought it'd be interesting to hear of others experiences with song lyrics that really related or stirred up emotions

I was thinking that you could post either part of the song or all of the song and discuss them.... if this is a stupid thread idea, let me know, but I thought it'd be interesting

I'm an emotional fellow though, so I really get into good lyrics, and enjoy thinking out loud

On the latest Jimmy Eat World CD, there is a song called Dizzy... here are the lyrics:

(Verse 1)
You close your eyes and kiss your hand then you blow it
But it isn't meant for me… and I notice
If the choice was ours alone
Then why did we both choose letting go?
Does it end like this?

Time never had a chance to heal your heart
Just a number always counting down to a new start
If you always knew the truth
Then the world would spin around you
Are you dizzy yet?

(Chorus)
Respectfully, some honesty I'm calling out
Do you hear this conversation we talk about?
Back away to the safety of a quiet house
If there's a half a chance in this moment, when your eyes meet mine, we show it

(Verse 2)
All talk not a lot to think we were living dreams
Shame never crept close to our naked feet
If there's something left to lose
Then don't let me wear out my shoes
I'm still walking

I tried but it rang and rang I called all night
On a pay phone (remember those!) from another life

If everything I meant to you,
You can lick and seal then fold in two then I've been so blind

(Chorus)
Respectfully, some honesty I'm asking now
Do you hear the conversation we talk about?
Back away to safety of a quiet house
If there's half a chance in this moment
When your eyes meet mine, we show it (Ooh)

(Bridge)
take it all back take the first, your last, your only
take it all back take it all back everything you showed me
this must be how it feels when the feeling goes

I told you as I hovered I'd never felt this way
You said: I had the shot that stops my clock, baby it's ok
You said you'd never have regrets
Jesus! Is there someone yet who got that wish?
Did you get yours? Babe?

(Chorus)
Respectfully, some honesty I'm asking now
Do you hear the conversation we talk around?
Back away to the safety of a quiet house
If there's half a chance in this moment...
When your eyes meet mine we show it.

----------

I could've written this song

Late in high school, the first time I really started getting attached to a girl, she played me like a fool and left me for another guy.

The first time I ever saw her around this guy, she blew me a kiss as she was leaving... and at the time I thought it was sweet or whatever, but the other guy was there too, and to this day I have no idea if she seriously was blowing me this kiss or him

Whatever, not a biggie, but that was about a week before we broke up... she kind of made me think that it was mutual, that we had different desires, we were going different directions (in high school??), blah blah. I was pretty beat up about it, and really was emotional for a couple weeks after, felt like I was idiot for getting attached to her

But then I find out that she's dating this other guy like a week later. "If the choice was ours alone, then why'd we both choose letting go?" I didn't choose letting go, she did.

I'm not quite sure what "Time never had a chance to heal your heart" means, but "If you always knew the truth, then the world would spin around you, are you Dizzy yet?" just makes me think about how freaking selfish she was and how she knew the whole freaking time there was another guy... the whole thing sounds like something sarcastic I would say... Everything must revolve around you, are you dizzy yet? (I'm so emo, I know)

The chorus... I'm just asking for some honesty, did you not hear the conversation when you broke up with me where you just talk around the truth? I should've known when my eyes met yours that we didn't have a chance.

I was blindsided by her and then the next day after we broke up she calls me saying that she loves me and if I do x,y, and z then we could be together, but she's so unsure of herself... "if there's something left to lose, then don't let me wear out my shoes, I'm still walking"... I'm still hanging to you, don't drag me along and give me falso hope

The bridge is where it really gets to me... I told her how I'd never felt that way about anyone, she smiled and said the same, that she was ready to get in a serious relationship or whatever to, that I was the 'marrying' type, played with my head, told me her dreams (I assume " had the shot that stops my clock, baby it's ok" meant to him that he should feel secure feeling that way towards her)

She seriously told me when we broke up she had no regrets, well, awesome, thanks for that.

Well, did you get that wish with this other guy? Babe?

Anyway, as I'm writing this it maybe comes off as immature or weird, but this song really got to me, and even though I'm totally 100% happily married and glad that it didn't work out with that girl now, I still hold a little bit of anger for how she [censored] me over, and then I heard this song and it was like I was singing it

Anyway, flame on or maybe you can tell a story of how some song really got to you

[ QUOTE ]
I wasn't there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say

I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

[/ QUOTE ]

- "The Living Years" (Mike and the Mechanics)

My son was born six months after my father died. We'd never communicated very well, so these lyrics jumped right out at me when the song hit the radio 3 years later.

edit: Also, the whole song "Tears in Heaven" tilts the hell out of me, as my son was born about the same time Clapton's was and looked very similar.

"The Opposite of Hallelujah" by Jens Lekman

http://www.scjag.com/mp3/sc/oppositeofhallelujah.mp3

(most relevant part of the lyrics bolded, but I'd recommend listening to the whole thing, at the link above)

I took my sister down to the ocean
But the ocean made me feel stupid
Those words of wisdom I had prepared
All seemed to vanish into thin air
Into the waves I stared

I picked up a seashell
To illustrate my homelessness
But a crab crawled out of it
Making it useless

And all my metaphors fell flat
Down on the rocks where we sat
She asked where are you at?

But sister, it's the opposite of hallelujah
It's the opposite of being you
You don't know 'cause it just passes right through you
You don't know what I'm going through

You don't know what I'm going through
You don't know what I'm going through
You don't know what I'm going through

We made our way home on the bikes we had borrowed
I still never told you about unstoppable sorrow
You still think I'm someone to look up to
I still don't know anything about you
Is it in you too?

You've got so much to live for, little sister
You've got so much to live for

But sister, it's the opposite of hallelujah
It's the opposite of being you
You don't know cause it just passes right through you
You don't know what I'm going through

You don't know what I'm going through
You don't know what I'm going through
You don't know what I'm going through
You don't know what I'm going through

-------------------------------------

I have a sister 12 years younger than me, and there are moments where she very much reminds me of myself. Sometimes this is a good thing: she excels in school, loves to read, etc. in the same way that I did. But most of the time I'm concerned. It feels like the family resemblance is much more of a curse, and I'm afraid that in the future she's going to face the awful depression and insecurity that has caused problems for my dad and me. The line "I still never told you about unstoppable sorrow" just preys on my worst fears in the world.

An optimistic one would be Dave Mathews Band "two step"

Two Step

Say, my love, I came to you
With best intentions
You laid down and gave to me just what
Im seeking
Love, you drive me to distraction

Hey my love do you believe that we
Might last a thousand years
Or more if not for this?
Our flesh and blood it ties
You and me right up
Tie me down

Celebrate we will
Because life is short but sweet for certain
Were climbing two by two
To be sure these days continue,
These things we cannot change

Hey, my love, you came to me like
Wine comes to this mouth
Grown tired of water all the time
You quench my heart and you
Quench my mind

Celebrate we will
Because life is short but sweet for certain
Were climbing two by two
To be sure these days continue,
The things we cannot

Celebrate, you and me, climbing
Two by two, to be sure
These days continue, things we cannot change

Oh, my love, I came to you
With best intentions
You laid down and gave to me just what
Im seeking

Celebrate we will
Because life is short but sweet for certain
Were climbing two by two
To be sure these days continue,
Things we cannot change...
Things we cannot change

Givin' the Dog a Bone - ACDC

She take you down easy
Going down to her knees
Going down to the devil
Down down to ninety degrees
Oh, She's blowing me crazy
Till my ammunition is dry

Oh, She's using her head again
She's using her head
Oh, She's using her head again

CHORUS:
I'm just a givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
I'm just a givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
I'm just a givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone

Yeow

She's no Mona Lisa
No, She's no Playboy star
But she'll send you to heaven
Then explode you to Mars

Oh, She's using her head again
Using her head again
She's using her head
Using her head again
Oh, She's using her head again
Using her head

CHORUS

Let's go
Oooh, oh, oh, oh

She got the power of union
Yeah, She only hits when it's hot
And if she likes what you're doing
Yeah, She'll give you alot
(Given everything she got)

I've just given the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
I've just given the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
I'm just givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
I'm just a givin' the dog a bone
Givin' the dog a bone
I'm just a given a dog
Givin' a dog
Givin' a dog
Ooooh
I'm just a givin' a dog a bone

Come on, guys, it helps if you write a little something. The OP did a whole big thing, but a paragraph is all you need to make this thread better than all the other "cut-and-paste some lyrics" threads

Re: Song lyrics that either hit home or have personal meaning

Serious response:
Faith No More's "A Small Victory," the last verses in particular. There are many levels to this song, but the simple subject is how we deal with losing. I'm very competitive and can lose myself in play. I have a tendency to be a sore loser especially if, to use a poker analogy, I play my hand right and still lose. The final verse is a sort of mantra that I can use when facing the wrong end of the draw. Sort of like, "why bother getting upset? They won't hear you anyway."

On another level it's about others' expectations for us and how our culture measures success. We tend to value winners. Whether it's the team captain or the class valedictorian. We forget that there are lessons to learn in losing, and that how we react to falling short is entirely within our own control. Anyway:

[ QUOTE ]

A hierarhcy
Spread out on the nightstand
The spirit of team
Salvation is another chance
A sore loser
Yelling with my mouth shut

A cracking portrait
The fondling of trophies
The null of losing
Can you afford that luxury? A sore winner
But I'll just keep my mouth shut

It shouldn't bother me
But it does

The small victories
The cankers and medallions
The little nothings
They keep me thinking that someday
I might beat you
But I'll just keep my mouth shut

It shouldn't bother me
But it does

IF I SPEAK AT ONE CONSTANT VOLUME
AT ONE CONSTANT PITCH
AT ONE CONSONANT RHYTHM RIGHT INTO YOUR EAR,
YOU STILL WON'T HEAR, YOU STILL WON'T HEAR

[/ QUOTE ]

Funny response:
There's a song on Faith No More's Album of the Year called "Got That Feeling." It's typical of Mike Patton lyrics in that the meaning is open to interpretation. I think Patton is comparing risky flatulence to playing the lottery.

[ QUOTE ]

Got that feeling
Luck is just a little of it
Got that feeling
I can't stop winning

A to Z
Look what you're missing, as we speak
Your number's rising, take a peak
There's just enough to go around, get a piece
Your own little piece of hell

Got that feeling
Loving every minute of it
Got that feeling
I can't stop winning

Have a drink
A pot of coffee, cannot think
Too many friends here, just an inch
Between striking out and striking rich, just a risk
One I'll take and take again...

[/ QUOTE ]

Good post!

My wife and I lost our first child and I can't even play Tears in Heaven" around her. She loves the song, as do I but it is just too hard sometimes.

I had the same thoughts on the "The Living Years"! Reminded me way too much of my father and I.

A couple of other songs that pretty much do the same thing to me are:

Neil Young, Old Man. They have this song on the juke box in the tavern I hang out in and I have to play it when I am there.

Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

My old man was a minister later in his life and I can remember one week he wrote a sermon based on this song. I wasn't around much after he became a minister but it was one of the times I happened to be in town and he told me he was pretty proud of this one and that I should make it to the service if I could. I went to church that Sunday and while I can't quote you anything from his sermon I can tell you that I was moved and think of my dad and I every time I hear this song.

Cat Stevens - Cats In The Cradle

A child arrived just the other day,
came to the world in the usual way,
But there were planes to catch
and bills to pay, he learned to walk while I was away
He was talking before I knew it and as he grew
he said I'm going to be like you Dad,
you know I'm going to be like you.

Chorus :
And the cat's in the cradle,
and the silver spoon, Little Boy Blue,
and the Man in the Moon,
When you coming home son, I don't know when
We'll get together then, you know we'll have a good time then.

My son turned 10 just the other day,
Said thanks for the ball now c'mon let's play
Will you teach me to throw, I said not today,
I've got a lot to do, he said that's ok
And he walked away and he smiled and he said
You know I'm going to be like you, Dad,
you know I'm going to be like you.

Chorus.

He came from college just the other day,
so much like a man I just had to say,
I'm proud of you, won't you sit for a while
He shook his head and said with a smile,
What I'm feeling like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later can I have them please.

Chorus.

I've long since retired and my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I'd like to see you, if you don't mind
He said I'd love to Dad, if I could find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and the kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking you Dad, it's been real nice talking to you.
And as I hung up the phone it occured to me
He'd grown up just like me, my boy was just like me.

Re: Song lyrics that either hit home or have personal meaning

Break Your Heart -Barenaked Ladies

The bravest thing I've ever done
Was to run away and hide
But not this time, not this time
And the weakest thing I've ever done
Was to stay right by your side
Just like this time, and every time
I couldn't tell you I was happy when you were gone
So I lied and said that I missed you when we were apart
I couldn't tell you, so I had to lead you on
But I didn't mean to break your heart

And if I always seem distracted
Like my minds somewhere else
That's because it's true, yes it's true
it's this stupid pride that makes me feel
Like I have to follow through
Even half-assedly, loving you
Why must I always speak in terms of cowardice?
When I guess I should have just come out and told you right from the start
Why must I always tell you all I want is this?
I guess 'cause I didn't want to break your heart

And you said
What'd you think that I was gonna do,
Curl up and die just because of you?
I'm not that weak, you know
What'd you think that I was gonna do,
Try to make you love me as much as I love you?
How could you be so low?
You arrogant man,
What do you think that I am?
My heart will be fine
Just stop wasting my time

And now I know that you will be okay, and that I got what I want
and that's rid of you
Good bye
And it's not cause I'll be missing you
That makes me fall apart
It's just that I didn't mean to break
No I didn't mean to break
No I didn't mean to break
Your heart

I had a girlfriend in college and we dated for awhile. She had always dated real [censored] before and fell instantly in love with me because I treated her with a little respect. Long story short, I figured out that we were great as friends but I didnt like the relationship. Instead of breaking it off I distanced myself from her emotionally until she got pissed and broke it off. She said that this was the worse because before, she knew she was dating [censored] and with me she thought she was getting a nice guy but I turned into a bigger [censored] cause I led her on. This song could have literally been written about how I felt about our relationship.

Re: Song lyrics that either hit home or have personal meaning

A lot of Dylan fans don't like this song because they say it's to repetitive and drawn out.Dylan said it was the only song that he ever regretted making because it's so harsh to the sister.
But the reason i like this song is the brutally honest lyrics about lost love and making mistakes in relationships that you can't recover from.

Another Side of Bob Dylan - Ballad In Plain D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGG9g...B8&index=9

I once loved a girl, her skin it was bronze.
With the innocence of a lamb, she was gentle like a fawn.
I courted her proudly but now she is gone,
Gone as the season she's taken.

Through young summer's breeze, I stole her away
From her mother and sister, though close did they stay.
Each one of them suffering from the failures of their day,
With strings of guilt they tried hard to guide us.

Of the two sisters, I loved the young.
With sensitive instincts, she was the creative one.
The constant scapegoat, she was easily undone
By the jealousy of others around her.

For her parasite sister, I had no respect,
Bound by her boredom, her pride to protect.
Countless visions of the other she'd reflect
As a crutch for her scenes and her society.

Myself, for what I did, I cannot be excused,
The changes I was going through can't even be used,
For the lies that I told her in hopes not to lose
The could-be dream-lover of my lifetime.

With unknown consciousness, I possessed in my grip
A magnificent mantelpiece, though its heart being chipped,
Noticing not that I'd already slipped
To a sin of love's false security.

From silhouetted anger to manufactured peace,
Answers of emptiness, voice vacancies,
Till the tombstones of damage read me no questions but, "Please,
What's wrong and what's exactly the matter?"

And so it did happen like it could have been foreseen,
The timeless explosion of fantasy's dream.
At the peak of the night, the king and the queen
Tumbled all down into pieces.

"The tragic figure!" her sister did shout,
"Leave her alone, God damn you, get out!"
And I in my armor, turning about
And nailing her to the ruins of her pettiness.

Beneath a bare light bulb the plaster did pound
Her sister and I in a screaming battleground.
And she in between, the victim of sound,
Soon shattered as a child 'neath her shadows.

All is gone, all is gone, admit it, take flight.
I gagged twice, doubled, tears blinding my sight.
My mind it was mangled, I ran into the night
Leaving all of love's ashes behind me.

The wind knocks my window, the room it is wet.
The words to say I'm sorry, I haven't found yet.
I think of her often and hope whoever she's met
Will be fully aware of how precious she is.

Ah, my friends from the prison, they ask unto me,
"How good, how good does it feel to be free?"
And I answer them most mysteriously,
"Are birds free from the chains of the skyway?"

Re: Song lyrics that either hit home or have personal meaning

On my depressed days, nothing hits me more than Trouble by Cat Stevens. I sometimes associate it with the death of my father, but I think that might just be because I also associate it with the scene in Harold and Maude when Maude commits suicide. More aptly I think it just has to do with the black cloud that depression can bring.

Trouble by Cat Stevens

Trouble
Oh trouble set me free
I have seen your face
And it's too much too much for me

Trouble
Oh trouble can't you see
You're eating my heart away
And there's nothing much left of me

I've drunk your wine
You have made your world mine
So won't you be fair
So won't you be fair

I don't want no more of you
So won't you be kind to me
Just let me go where
I'll have to go there

Trouble
Oh trouble move away
I have seen your face
and it's too much for me today

Trouble
Oh trouble can't you see
You have made me a wreck
Now won't you leave me in my misery

I've seen your eyes
and I can see death's disguise
Hangin' on me
Hangin' on me

I'm beat, I'm torn
Shattered and tossed and worn
Too shocking to see
Too shocking to see

Trouble
Oh trouble move from me
I have paid my debt
Now won't you leave me in my misery

Trouble
Oh trouble please be kind
I don't want no fight
And I haven't got a lot of time

Re: Song lyrics that either hit home or have personal meaning

I am profoundly moved by The Beatles 'Golden Slumbers' (or more properly the three joined songs on Abbey Road that start with 'Golden Slumbers') in a very profound way. It's like the perfect song about fatherhood and being in a family, and what being a real and devoted father and husband is all about, warts and all, without being overt about it in any way.

Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby

Golden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby

Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby

Boy, you gotta carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time
Boy, you gotta carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time

I never give you my pillow
I only send you my invitation
And in the middle of the celebrations
I break down

Boy, you gotta carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time
Boy, you gotta carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time

Oh yeah, all right
Are you going to be in my dreams
Tonight?

And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love you make.

Wooden Ships
Crosby, Stills and Nash

If you smile at me
I will understand
'Cause that is something
Everybody everywhere does in the same language

I can see by your coat, my friend
You're from the other side
There's just one thing I've got to know
Can you tell me please, who won?

Say, can I have some of your purple berries
Yes, I've been eating them for six or seven weeks now
Haven't got sick once
Prob'ly keep us both alive

Wooden ships on the water, very free, and easy
Easy, you know the way it's supposed to be
Silver people on the shoreline let us be
Talk'n 'bout very free, and easy

Horror grips us as we watch you die
All we can do is echo your anguished cries
Stare as all human feelings die
We are leaving, you don't need us

Go take a sister, then, by the hand
Lead her away from this foreign land
Far away, where we might laugh again
We are leaving, you don't need us

And it's a fair wind
Blowin' warm out of the south over my shoulder
Guess I'll set a course and go

Re: Song lyrics that either hit home or have personal meaning

When I was 34 my mother died I felt that my life was almost over, that there was no point in buying anything, going or doing anything. To that end "Dust In The Wind" can make me cry nearly every time I hear it. The lyrics are so simple, but so true.

I close my eyes, only for a moment and the moments gone
All my dreams pass before my eyes a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind

Same old song, just a drop of water in the endless sea
All we do crumbles to the ground 'tho we refuse to see
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind

Now, don't hang on nothing last forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind

So true, these words, so true.

Sometimes I don't know where this dirty road is taking me
sometimes I don't even know the reason why
but I guess I'll keep a gambling, lots of booze and lots of rambling
it's easier then just waiting around to die

Okay, this is sad &/or corny, your choice.

I grew up loving Winnie the Pooh. Dumb bear you can't help but love during all stages of your life.. I now have a daughter who's taken a liking to this dumb old bear. What I'm trying to get at is that I feel like I've lost my childhood but atleast I get to watch someone else enjoy it from the sidelines.... .sad that your childhood is gone, but happy that you've given the opportunity for someone else to enjoy one.

Whatever, I still love this song. *bolded part is the part that really hits me*

Christopher Robin and I walked along
Under branches lit up by the moon
Posing our questions to Owl and Eeyore
As our days disappeared all too soon
But I've wandered much further today than I should
And I can't seem to find my way back to the Wood

So help me if you can
I've got to get back
To the House at Pooh Corner by one
You'd be surprised
There's so much to be done
Count all the bees in the hive
Chase all the clouds from the sky
Back to the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh

Winnie the Pooh doesn't know what to do
Got a honey jar stuck on his nose
He came to me asking help and advice
From here no one knows where he goes
So I sent him to ask of the Owl if he's there
How to loosen a jar from the nose of a bear

It's hard to explain how a few precious things
Seem to follow throughout all our lives
After all's said and done I was watching my son
Sleeping there with my bear by his side
So I tucked him in, I kissed him and as I was going
I swear that the old bear whispered "Boy welcome home"

Re: Song lyrics that either hit home or have personal meaning

Sarah McLachlan wrote this song while she was on the road. I heard her say that it's basically the way the musician always feels...which, for me, at least, is true. This song also has quite a bit of personal meaning for me, because local radio stations in Bryan-College Station did memorials for the Texas A&M Bonfire Collapse in '99 using this song, intersplicing quotes from people they'd interviewed in between the verses. Since I was present at the collapse, and was greatly affected by it, this song has a double whammy of meaning for me.

Angel
Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
There's always some reason
To feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
Oh beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins
Let me be empty and weightless
And maybe I'll find some peace tonight

(Chorus)
In the arms of the angel
Far away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight line
And everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
And the storm keeps on twisting
You keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack
It don't make no difference
Escaping one last time
It's easier to believe in this sweet madness
Oh this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

(Chorus)
In the arms of the angel
Far away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here

You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here
