Zecco is popular because of its $0 commissions. Zecco is legitimate, but it's relatively new and there is a risk that it could be acquired by another company in the next decade. Wells Fargo also has $0 commissions (if you have $25k or more with them), but there's less risk of acquisition. I've heard great things about both of them. Bank of America has a similar $0 commission deal, but BoA's sucks.

SogoInvest is another deep discount brokerage that you might look at. I've never used it.

I use Scottrade, which has $7 commissions. One advantage of Scottrade is that it has branch offices all over the US so you can speak to someone face to face. In addition, they seem like a stable company that will not be acquired like newer discount brokerages. And thirdly, they have a $0 transfer out fee - some brokerages charge you to transfer out, and it's incredibly annoying. If you want a referral to Scottrade (3 free trades for each of us), PM me.

Keeping costs low is important, so I'd recommend Wells Fargo or Zecco. However, I'd also like to stress that it doesn't matter very much. You can expect similar services and prices with most discount brokerages.

I have no knowledge of Canadian brokerages, so I'm afraid I can't help you housenuts.

The two big discount ones for "traders" (not investors) seem to be MBtrading and Interactive Brokers. I have used both and they are both good. Much cheaper commissions.

I [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Scottrade.

I haven't heard much about Tradeking, although it is usually highly ranked in business magazines.
