Necessary properties vs. essential properties?

Is this like some famous debate? A teacher of a friend of mine offered anyone in the class an automatic A (the quarter just started) if they could answer the following correctly:

Is the set of necessary properties for a given thing the same as the set of essential properties for the same thing?

I'm going for 'no' as the correct answer.

freeroll on an A - plus no is always more likely that yes for questions like these.

Are you sure you've gotten the question right? The traditional answer is yes.

Sounds like just a semantic riddle. I can't imagine the teacher having gotten many As in his life.

Philo, and 1's&0's, elaborate please?

It seems that if someone (me) has no frame of referance as to the OP the answer is, 'no/symantics riddle'.

Some thinking from those that seem to believe they know the answer please...?
