Program that edits .png files

Looking for a paintbrushesque program that will edit .png files and leave the transparency. Paintbrush edits them but fills the transparent areas with white. I've googled to no avail, basically I am trying to edit a Full Tilt table image.

I'm sure the Gimp does this. It's open-source, so certainly free as in beer. There's a substantial learning curve, though, since it's in the realm of Photoshop, not Paint.

Gimp definitely does this. The transparency part is fairly simple too (well as simple as things get with Gimp).

You can also download 30 day free trials of photoshop which might help if its a one-off thing.
