I downloaded a leak but it was incomplete so I never really listened to it.

Edit: can't find a leak on OiNK which means I won't be downloading yet, but I'll listen to what I have.

how does it rate compared to their others? I'm a huge fan of "Her Majesty..." and think "Picaresque" was also a GREAT piece of work. Their other stuff also rocks.

first impression: 7:29 into "The Island" is the best music moment of the year. two tracks into it and I'm not sure it isn't the best album of the years so far, wow.

I am currently aquiring this record to give it a listen. This news is very exciting considering I love their last record and was quite dissapointed by this year in music. By any chance joker are there are sea shantees [sp] because those are so awesome? Any way of telling us how it is so revolutionary in a few words, or is it just them to the next degree?

Snaggle - I do happen to love amazing music. Which of their previous albums would you recommend to a Decemberists first timer?

Furthermore - I was reading some reviews of their albums on Amazon and people said it was "Pirate-y." Needless to say, I am already sold.

for the pirate-y ness get "Her Majesty." I think "Castaways and Cutouts" is better but they're really really close. Their 2005 release, Picaresque, also owns. So.. you can't go wrong. But for Piratey, yeah, Her Majesty.

PJ: I'm noticing a very R.E.M. vibe, perhaps that's contributing to your love? obviously it's a good thing.

I would recommend all of them, but I would start with "Castaways and Cutouts" - largey b/c its their first. Then I would do "Her Majesty the Decemberists" and then "Picareque."

So far I found this link to three tracks on the new album. Am listening to "O Valencia" and it was very awesome.

They are definetly Piratey. And lyrically and musically beautiful [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

People should download those tracks immediately, as they will be taken down pretty quickly. Capitol Records is going ballistic on audio blog asses for it.

listen to the three tracks posted up above. decemberists are a lot more accessible than nmh, a lot more polished. they're also evolving, now I'd say they're like prog folk, which is weird.

I'm not sure that I'd say they have much in common other than a similarly whiny/nasal sounding vocalist. Granted, that's a pretty big similarity.

I've enjoyed the Decemberists I've heard when they aren't in full-on "arr, matey" gimmick mode.

Song About Sex was the first NMH I liked.in fact it got me hooked on the band, then I started to love Aeroplane

Yeah, I mean... got-damn.

It is *very* rare that I do the audio equivalent of a double take. Jaw-dropping. It's like getting a cold bucket of water thrown in your face. Like the other music you've been listening to has been sleepwalking, and this is the wake-up call.

The last time I got this excited by a new sound was The Go! Team's record... this isn't as much a "new sound" as it is a complete re-invention of an established sound... and it's invigorated by new ideas about instrumentation, composition, dynamic changes, etc.

And only two listens so far... I'll need to pay attention to the lyrics next time, because I haven't even begun to analyze those.

Has everybody drank of the Decemberists kool-aid? My ex-roommate used to cane Picaresque daily and I hated pretty much every song on there.

Writing Eli The Barrow Boy is a crime best prosecuted in the Hague.

FWIW, I love a lot of pussy indie hipster music, too, like Secret Stars, Destroyer, Math & Physics, Ted Leo, etc.

Crzylgs -- what I'm saying is that this is a MAJOR leap on the band's part. It's like going from Pablo Honey to OK Computer, totally skipping The Bends.

If you liked the band before this, you'll love this album. But if you *didn't* like the band before this, there's still a good chance this album will impress you -- because it's that much of an improvement... it's mature, ambitious, and completely surprising.
