Seems to me that you're the one with the fundamental flaw of understanding. He's paying $710 of what will be a $1970 pot which is 36% and he's got 37.% equity even versus a range of QQ/KK/AA. So even if your range was 100% QQ/KK/AA he'd still be correct in calling. Even if all you had here was a set he'd have 32% equity. So once you start throwing in AK or other types of hands that you nmay be making plays with depending on aggressive history it's even more correct.

What's debatable here is the call pre flop which is not some "fundamental" mistake if you guys have been playing aggressively with each other.
