So after you told the kid you were missing $500, he still tried to take a half-full bucket of coins? Sounds like he's either completely brain-dead or gets off on stealing.

1) Kid wanted to get caught.

2) Kid wants attention, isn't getting it from whor mother or psuedo-distant father.

HB-

Be a good uncle and nip this [censored] in the bud. This kid is looking at big trouble.

Your nephew should have to work as your butler until you feel the debt is completely repaid.

HB,

If money is tight for your brother, seems like just having them send you his hand would be better, but whatever.

That would've been ok w/ me, and more sensible money-wise, but they want the kid to really learn his lesson. It's going to be real tough for him unless he's a psycho because when he's visited in the past we've treated him very well. As I said, I'm going to try to take some of the sting out of it when he's finished and let him know that it'll all be forgiven but he's got to never even think of doing anything like it again.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with everything but trying to take any sting out of it. You should make the kid feel it. Don't be outright mean, but there's no reason to make him feel any less guilty than he should. Softening it for a kid who's shown such a blatant disrespect for his own blood doesn't seem like it would be the best way of fixing this.

It sounds like your nephew is bound for a prison stint.

Once the 500 went missing, I personally would've done something like:

"Could everyone come in here for a minute?"

"The day you arrived, $100 went missing from my billfold. Since then, I've locked up all my stuff in a box, but somehow another $500 has gone missing from there too."

"That being the case, whoever took my mother [censored] money had better give me back my mother [censored] money mother [censored] NOW!"

Howard, your solution was a lot more sane, but way too soft considering the circumstances. The coins thing just made it ridiculous...

Your nephew's father is also an idiot.

Good luck. You sound like a good guy.

HB,

I kid, I kid. Just make a comment at dinner like "yeah and i was playing poker, cashed out for $1900 but when I got home, I only had $1800 in my pocket. strange, huh?" then make not-so-obvious eye contact with the kid, and gauge his response.

or put on an elaborate play in which a 14-year-old pours poison in a sleeping uncle's ear.

You left out the part where after he apologies you kick him in the balls as hard as you can.
