RIP Luciano Pavarotti
http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Musi...ead/index.html
Very sad to hear about this - I heard on my classical radio station (NY TIMES station) this morning that he was in serious condition. He was a true master and his voice would make me choke up at times. I'm very sad that I never got to see him in concert. His "signature" song, http://youtube.com/watch?v=ONUCPKdGcrk |

RIP
total body goosebumps around 2:42 on that vid |
Re: RIP Luciano Pavarotti
This is a huge loss. It would be like Tiger Woods dying or any currently living figure that is the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) at their profession. Woods being the biggest superstar ever in golf, Pavarotti being the biggest superstar ever in opera.

Re: RIP Luciano Pavarotti
Very sad indeed. Just came home to see the news on cnn.com. I'm quite shocked actually.

I like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRr1mw-VHq4
because it was in the Seinfeld episode "The Opera." |
Re: RIP Luciano Pavarotti
Could not believe the news...
Definately was hit harder than i would have expected. I saw him once when I was in 5th grade and still remember it, and I am not into opera at all. The man was amazing! |

Re: RIP Luciano Pavarotti
I never really listened to Opera. That video does give goosebumps. Man can that guy hit a note. RIP!

Also, arguably Caruso was bigger http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enrico_Caruso |
Re: RIP Luciano Pavarotti
By every measure, Pavarotti was bigger than Caruso. An interesting statement by Carreras:
[ QUOTE ] Carreras told reporters in Karlstad, Sweden, that "there is no doubt that he has been one of the most important tenors of all times." "I remember that last time I was visiting him in his town in Modena, at his home, he was preparing some special bread and tomato for me together with prosciutto. He was entertaining also in the gastronomic aspect that he liked very much," Carreras said. "We have to remember him as the great artist that he was, the man with such a wonderful charismatic personality, very good friend and a great poker player." [/ QUOTE ] |

[/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] Yes, but Caruso sold millions of records in pre-TV, pre-Internet times. He couldn't appear at World Cup ceremonies etc. I've been watching Pavarotti videos on Youtube and it's very hard to find any of the good stuff on which his reputation was based. Instead I just see execrable duets with the likes of Bryan Adams, Barry White, The Spice Girls, etc. Some Caruso: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ozan4D5Fy...ed&search= |

Re: RIP Luciano Pavarotti
I wasn't a huge fan, but I thought this pic from his funeral mass in Italy was pretty amazing with the planes perfectly synched.

Same thing with me. If someone asked me what i thought of Pavarotti i'd probably say he's great, but i don't really believe it. All i see are these horrible horrible opera/pop song fusions and they sound terrible imo. It's like on idol when you see people from style A singing style B and it sounds [censored] 90% of the time (although occasionally totally awesome). I'm assuming there's good stuff out there, and i like his popular stuff like nessun dorma etc. Can any serious fans recommend some of his better stuff, or tell me why he is so great beyond "his rendition of nessun dorma at the world cup was incredible" or "he bridged the gap between opera and popular music". |
Re: RIP Luciano Pavarotti
I wouldn't know a high C if it bit me on the ass, but the comments here say this is the song that made him famous:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHv_lZK0y2A Pour Mon Ame Fille (Donizetti) The note at the end is pretty incredible. |
