If Ungar were still alive, how would he be doing?

Uh say he kicks the drug habit and focuses on poker. How good is he today?

Not that good, he'd prolly only win about 30% of the 10k events he played.

Just another donkament player getting staked when big events roll around?

Probably going broke often because he's too proud to grind mid stakes.

Re: If Ungar were still alive, how would he be doing?

BIG assumption to make, that he'd kick the drugs. One could argue that a lot of his poker success was due to the same go for broke, all-out mentality that caused his death. But assuming he quit the drugs, I still think he'd be enjoying quite a bit of success at poker --- his innate feel for the game, combined with his amazing intuition and recollection would still make him a top pro. But I still say he'd win at poker and then blow it on sports betting or the ponies.

Easily one of the best tourney players ever. It's sad how it all ended, but if he wasn't such a degen and could kick the drugs he could have been the best. 5 WSOP bracelets before his death, Phil would have been chasing him these days.

Re: If Ungar were still alive, how would he be doing?

He was by-far the best Gin player around during his time. And he learned Poker quickly. Although they are drastically different games, they are both cards.

And he had an incredible sense of cards (as proven with his Gin game and his quick adept learning of Poker)...

Sure he went broke but what player hasn't? That doesn't signify his skills, just his gambooooool.

Depending if he had the hunger, which I doubt, he would be the greatest of all the tournament players. No question.

Great tourny player, may not do as well in live games as he used to do though. He will still probably be a winning player but people have found a way to combat hyper aggressive styles like his in the side games so he may not do as well as some people think. Might be close to how Gus Hansen does.

If he wasn't who he was, who would he be?

You want an estimation of his talent, but long-term success in anything is never about talent. It's always about character. People often want to treat poker is the exception to that rule, but it isn't.

He would probably be the most sponsored player out there with all of his accomplishments and not have to worry about much. Of course he would blow it all on other degenerate gambling but hey at least he would be drug free and alive

He would rarely have a roll but would just play donkaments and do well with an adjusted style because of all the LAGs out there playing a similar gamestyle that was not promoted a decade or two ago.

i agree but what ranking does one of the best fall into these days?

mike caro said that you can take the best player and the 150th rated player, put them on a same tournament table everyday and it would take a few years for the results to show the difference.

i dont think donkaments is a good gauge for poker skillz.

i also dont think stu would be one of the best in cash games today either........not if he has a drug problem or tilt issues which he had.

theres a lot more to the overall picture of being one of the best other than just having talent. lots of other factors that have to be balanced with the talent.

i think it should be more of a question of, "would stu have the potential to be one of the best these days?"

i say yes.

This is all true. However, if we use a working definition of intelligence as 'the ability to adapt to changing and varying circumstances', then had ungar kicked his habit and concentrated on poker there is every chance he would have kept up with the changes in the game... After all, this is what the OP asked.

not what kind of drugs would he be doing, ldo.

yes, very serious. look, i'm pointing at my face right now ........this is my serious face.

is there any doubt that the long run is harder to establish in tourneys rather than cash games?

if you are a great tournament player yet go a few years without taking down a major score, does that mean you suck?

i dont see why anyone would try to gauge someone's poker skills in a more luck oriented arena like donkaments. its a guage, but i think cash games are a better guage. thats all. just my opinion.

Re: If Ungar were still alive, how would he be doing?

From what I read, before he became a total mess he wasnt even playing that much poker cuz it turned into a total grind. Instead he would just bet on sports and find other ways to gamble. So if he was alive today he would be on the 200/400 plo games on ftp LDO.

Gap23Razor 11-27-2007 05:05 PM

Re: If Ungar were still alive, how would he be doing?

from what i've read

Stu Unger's style of play was similar to that of Layne Flack; also, according to one contemporary i heard in a radio interview (sorry, can't recall the name) Unger's style was effective in tournies and short handed, but in a full ring cash game he was not good.

i doubt if all his innate genius could overcome the volume of computer analysis now available--he would probably have had to adapt his play

He's living in Florida with Bigfoot and Elvis. They make made cash posting mall upskirt shots on the intra-webs, and then lose it all betting on Jeopardy reruns.
