i can't think of a reason to call third, especially with a dead king. It is really an awful call given the action.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm very new to stud so I appreciate any help. In response to 2461badugi no it wasn't play money; however, considering it was only a 5.50 tourney on FTP it was pretty close. I almost felt like I was playing bingo. Perhaps this is because I am so inexperienced at stu, but I felt like a lot of people felt that as soon as they were in a pot they had to keep calling to the river. I guess the 3 bet on third was a strong indicator that a pair of dueces wasn't good.My thinking on calling was that I thought well it was only so much to call and if I spike a duece on 4th I'm great if not I'm out. I now realize this mindset is incorrect. I'm probably giving away bets this way and if I do spike the 3rd deuce like I did it is probable that it won't hold until the river.

Re: Trips gone wrong

Your assesment of ppl calling to the river is correct. Once a couple of raises go in a hand low level tournaments hands become hang on for dear life scenarios. any set will hold up a fair amount in a 4 way or less hand in stud. The problem with lower sets is the reversed implied odds situation. It is the same reason why calling down with lower pair against big pair is very risky. You lose when you dont hit and you lose more when you both hit.

Thanks chucky. I think this turned into a lose more when you both hit situation and ultimately crippled me in the tourney (not that I was really expecting to get much out of that tourney other than experience).

No problem. 3 flush and 3 straight hands are really good to play in massive multi-way pots.
