Could you speed walk a mile in 10min??? Drunk Prop Bet.

Ok heres the quick story.

Out drinking last night with a bunch of friends and its getting pretty late and somehow we start talking about how fast we could run a mile in. Yada yada yada...'I could walk a mile faster than that' yada yada yada 'I bet I could walk a mile in 10mins'. I stop him right there and call BS. We end up betting money and if he still remembers the bet, we're going to a track and I'm going to put him to the test.

Anyone think he can do it?

A few things:
My friend was in the army for 3 years but has been out for 2 years now and has been smoking and drinking not stop as hes now a college student with no job. He got out of the amry early because he blew out his knee, which he claims if healthy now but its still something to consider.

Also, I'm not sure what the exact rules for speed walking are but we're just going by one foot must always be on the ground at a time.

He needs to travel just under 9 feet per second on average to complete a mile in the 10 mins.

I think I could. It would be pretty close though.

depends how you define "walk". try to get on a treadmill and "walk" 6 mph.

It is humanly possible, but your friend will not achieve it.

You'll need to agree on an outsider to judge if his feet leave the ground or not, or you will have a hudge mess on your hands.

Does he get to start over if he gets DQed? If no, I think you have a very good bet. If yes, I have no idea.

If you can learn the correct racewalking "form", it's definitely possible. I believe the racewalking record for the mile is around 5-6 minutes.

World class race walkers can do major distances at 6:30 pace.

Speaking as one who used to be able to run a sub-6 mile but now is probably somewhere in the 8:30-9 minute range I'm going to go out on a limb and say no.

I don't think he realizes how relatively fast a 10 minute mile is. For someone who isn't trained in race-walking I'm also guessing that trying to impersonate the technique will kill his calves before the mid-way point...and that's assuming he's actually anywhere close to being on-pace by the middle and I don't think he will be.

Definitely get someone else to make sure he doesn't cheat and go into running mode. I don't think he can do it without practicing or training for it.

w/some practice this is easily attainable. w/o, probably not
